Ive had this depression for a while, and I finally decided to take a break to sort my life out and that. Last session was on wednesday. I thought being off them would make me happier whilst sober, but its been almost a week and if anything I feel worse. Is this just a temporary thing due to neurotransmitter depletion or whatever? Or am I as good as Im going to get without pharmaceutical intervention? (I was thinking more of medical antidepressants rather than more recreational drugs)

Without knowing what you drugs you were taking, we can't really comment with any specificity.

That being said: if you've realize that you need to take time off from drugs, this means that you're taking a step in the right direction. These sorts of changes don't happen overnight, and your body and mind need time to return to a 'normal' state. This could take weeks, months, years-- but if you want to improve your life overall, chances are these trying times will be worth enduring.

A few things that couldn't hurt: eat a healthy diet (mostly fruits, vegetables, and whole foods in general); exercise regularly, and find some sort of intellectual stimulation (reading is great, maybe some meditation practice?). Once you've cleaned up your body, the mental usually starts to work itself out...

How often were you using those chemicals?

You will return to normal. Your serotonin levels are probably low, thus resulting in depression, irritability, etc. You'll be fine. I also went through a period of depression after I was using LSD and MDMA fairly frequently (though not as often as some, but everyone is different). Pretty much just follow what Changed said. Reading is an awesome way to stay occupied and exercise your mind. Meditation, though tricky to stick to, is probably one of the best things I've ever tried. After a few weeks of sobriety and taking care of yourself, you'll begin to notice the positive changes paying off.

good luck

Like twice a week. Ive booked a doctors appointment, my moods are too erratic. Just now for about 20 minutes I was the lowest I had felt in days, then as quickly as it came on it vanished.

yea you need to supplement your neurotransmitters for a couple weeks after stopping. I recommend taking 100mg 5-htp a day and 500mg l-tyrosine 3x a day to start (you can adjust this after feeling how stimulated you are)

niacin also helps a lot. It encourages blood flow through vasodialation, speeds up the detox process, and acts as a tranquilizer.

What is your diet like? What originally sorted my depression out was ayahuasca but giving your brain and body all the tools it needs to run properly (nutrients) improved my mood as well...

Eating nothing but healthy foods and water for a few weeks will give you something new to focus on... and you really should see your mood improving, especially if you exercise. And like folk have said above - reading and meditation (Y)...

Or perhaps you'd like to seek out ayahuasca... but in any case, avoid prescription chemicals

good luck man

while ayahuasca or ketamine might be a suitable quick fix, living healthier is obviously a better option in the long run.
