The paranoia on weed seems to be quite common.

Is there any pharmacological reasons known for this effect?

(Did a semi-lazy search and didn't find any arguments for such.)

in the advanced drug discussion forum someone posted a study saying cannibinoids decrease gaba or something like that

i'l try to find it

Cannabinoids inhibit GABA neurotransmission in certain parts of the brain, which is responsible for the anxiety-provoking effects.

for me it is quite the opposite. the numbing effect of indicas cause me to trip out something as i cant feel myself. sativa strains are much clearheaded of a high and I am able to reason with the anxiety.

but for the anxiety/paranoia, have some alcohol

I agree, Sativa is much better for anxiety.

I hate anxiety, so annoying when theres nothing to be afraid of. Now I understand why xanax and weed don't work well together. If you try to mix weed with xanax (ie: smoking a bowl after taking a few bars) you won't feel any thc whatsoever. The anti anxiety effect of xanax cancels out the thc, due to the gaba receptors intercepting the flow of thc to the cannabinoid receptors in your brain. Gimme some nice stony indica anyday, I hate the freaked out effects of pure sativa when I just wanna chill out. Now if I'm up for an adventure of psychedelic proportions, I'll smoke some sativa and drop some acid

^It makes perfect sense. I didn't get to smoke sativa very often when I started smoking, so I was used to indica's effects and not sativas. So when I would smoke sativa it'd make me all freaked out

Yeah that makes perfect sense dude, guy smokes type A weed most of his life, thats his idea of a weed high, along comes type B and when he's not experiencing the same high he gets a bit sketchy.

when cannabis is abused heavily, its possible for the brain to change how it interprets the high.

i used to smoke 1/2oz in a day at times when i was a teenager... or an eighth in an evening, quite often. heavy smoking. i loved it. but now...

i dont even smoke anymore. i cannot handle one toke. not one. instant panic attack.

my weed days are over. fuck it.

I still love LSD!!! woot!!! eep!!! =D fuck yes!!!

im so happy that i did not lose my love for LSD. I would be really sad.

my gf is the exact same way...
she freaked out way too much - killed my high...

i never really get paranoia when im high - just keep telling myself it's all in my head and enjoy the high ;)

so whats the most effective means to counteract that effect?

It just happens to some people.

Either learn to accept it and understand that it happens to you and try to make a joke/game out of it when it happens like just telling yourself, "Oh I'm high again and thinking paranoid thoughts, it's all in my head and no big deal", be picky about when you smoke, or else don't smoke at all.

Also IME smoking indicas rather than Sativas can be better but YMMV, and also avoiding smoking herb before you have to do things like socialize with strangers who you don't know and who aren't cool with other people smoking.

Drinking a few beers helped mellow me out too as did smoking a lot more often than once/a few times a month.

Also the fact that pot is illegal is a huge factor in people's paranoia too.

I think the main reason for paranoia is the fact that bud is illegal (most everywhere). So committing an illegal act, combined with heightened mental processes and awareness, can lead to some serious fear. I wonder if those who have marijuana cards in Cali get paranoia anyway..

Thing is, if you can accept yourself, and are around people who you know are good, the fear should dissolve (if exist at all).

Of course, the whole GABA explanation is the real real answer, haha..

So cannabinoids inhibit GABA.

I find the paranoia effect of weed quite interesting and would like to experiment with these states of mind. It's no very common for me to become paranoid from smoking cannabis, but I have experienced that too.

I'm thinking of save ways to produce temporary paranoid mindstates.

Thoughts?

Same man. I used to be a marathon smoker; the more weed the happier I was. Now I can't even take two hits without having to run back to my apt. trippin out. For some reason weed just isn't the same for me anymore. Oh well, at least I'll save money and now won't have to worry about drug tests from my job.
