there's this person who's a jerk and unethical, but people assumed that he had more layers to him. turns out, he doesn't. what do you think of the idea that some people exist merely to drive you ?

define 'drive' in this context.

ok. so i believe that the purpose of being for some people is to point other people in the right direction. these people have no depth and act as guides for the rest of us in our journey through life. they show us, in a sense, how not to be, or how we have more things going for us than they do, or something else along those lines. in that way, they drive us to be better as people, to fulfill our potentials, reach a greater understanding of ourselves, etc. i just wanted to see what other people thought of this.

Your just as fake as the next guy, were all fakes.Plastified by external influences and acceptable behaviors.

how do you know the nice people werent put there to drive you too?

How can you possibly say someone is alive simply to be a purpose to yourself? This someone who is supposedly "fake" is only alive to make you feel more real? They are only here to make you feel better about who you are?

Look at yourself. You have just labeled yourself as a hypocrit and a fake and you dont even know it.

Blah, useless.

^^^And by belittling this fucker you're a fake, you fake. Which now makes me a fake. Oh my god, its a vicious cycle of fakeness! Arghhh!!!!!!!!!!

But come to think of it, what does fake even mean? What, I ask you?

Fake?

Fake?!

It doesn't make any sense.

How can anything be fake?

Or is everything fake?

Do I even exist?

What is the purpose of living?

Oh god oh god oh god.

ok, nevermind. i didn't mean it in an arrogant way. of course, i don't know that my own purpose isn't to open someone else's eyes. i brought it up because it came up in a discussion with someone else, and it's *apparently* an unusual way to see things. i wanted to see how other people felt and hopefully start a discussion to better shape this idea. by purpose, i did mean "why he's a part of my little sphere of being," and i'll admit that the flaw in that is assuming there is a reason. sorry if i offended anyone. i'll take this discussion elsewhere.

I think you're missing the point^

you're talkin about goals and success to a bunch of moral relativists and buddhists.

part of the joy of participating in a discussion board like bluelight is that, very often, the discussion goes off at an angle we least expect or didn't see.

if you are only interested in a discussion which goes in a set direction, what's the point of discussion in the first place?

The moment you begin to see people as less than people, you've got a problem.

everyone has their layers.
accessing them is another thing.

to build that sort of trust that you can let go of everything you pretend to be, its a huge feat in itself. theres too many people out there who pretend to be the 'socially acceptable' and thus fit in with everyone else. its horrible when you can see thru facades like this.

theres not many people out there who i feel are real. but i think its a goal for everyone to just be themselves and stop pretending.

point taken, and i always appreciate what you have to say, but i didn't expect this to become a bash session. i really just wanted to see what other people thought, and i guess, now i do.

and thanks, clip, for saying something worth something.

There was no discussion, only flaming. There may have been a point buried in the flames, but that's not how grownups debate. I'm disappointed in all of you. And not just because punky is my roommate. I had a long conversation about this with her before reading this thread, and if you had given her a chance to elaborate, you'd see a very well-constructed idea that I believe to be true. And like she said, she's not assuming that she isn't one of those people she's talking about. There is a cyclical nature to the idea she's talking about. Come on guys, I know you can do better.
