A nice article from VICE.

I bet a lot of you guys will agree with what is said in these comments.

It's commonly held knowledge that most YouTube comments rank up there with Houellebecq novels and Somme fatality statistics as some of the most depressing things you can read. Even if it's a video of an elephant cuddling a pug or a Philip Glass recital, you'll usually find yourself greeted with the same shitstorm of racism, homophobia, misogyny, accusations of n00bery and somebody who says they'll put a curse on you if you don't re-post a story about a girl who died in a car crash to at least ten of your friends.

Thankfully, there are a few diamonds of decency in this online hate-pit and they usually arrive beneath music videos. Sometimes you read stories about ageing couples who had their first kiss in a Wisconsin diner as "Tiny Dancer" played on the jukebox. Sometimes you see really enthusiastic Europeans thanking the uploader of a death metal track with a smiley face. And sometimes, just sometimes, YouTube commenters prove they're capable of being funny.

However, if you want to find the most inspiring and poignant posts on YouTube, you could do far worse than loading up a rave/hardcore playlist comprised of tracks from the late 80s and early 90s.

its heartening, but at the same time.. kinda depressing when you look at the current state of electronic music... Its so widespread, yet its lost its soul/spirit.

I am one of said commenters :)

Youtube comments are often better than the videos themselves...I've seen some gold comments. Even the hatred and vitriol you see is so damn inappropriate it's funny.

Nice read! Just listening to some of those tunes now. Some right quality in there. Remember going to an Atlantis reunion night at Sub Club a few years ago and was amazing hearing that old vibe on copious amounts of pills. Very envious of the 'old days'. Certainly was an exciting time being all fresh and new, nobody giving a shit about anything, just having a fucking good time. I've seen some of those videos and the night scenes are crazy. Beats the hell out of the club scene nowadays, although I obviously still enjoy it.

I completely missed the rave scene of the late 80s but really wish I'd been there. A lot of the youtube comments remind me of the Hunter S Thompson description of San Fransisco in the late 60s.

Going to the Fantazia reunion later in the year which will be interesting, but I know nothing like the original Fantazia nights.

One of my favorites was on a starcraft 2 trailer, "insert arabic writing here" (response) "no, there wont be improvised explosive devices in starcraft 2"

'Tis has nothing, nothing to do with the San Fransico era.
Yes, I'm not stupid, but that HST paragraph can equally apply to the late 80s rave scene. ;)

Anyway, I take it back. Everything fell into place last night and I was transported to 1989. Incredible MDMA that it seemed everyone else had too, so spent the night being PLURy retards to some amazing music. Was good. :D

I went to one about a year or so ago and it was a really bad atmosphere. Loads of 40 something's off their box, but also loads of chavs
