Ranitidine the same as Cimetidine?

Are these the same?
I found a bottle of my Grandpa's prescription for Ranitidine HCL 150MG.
Would these potentiate opioids at all? Is this Cimetidine?

Any help would be appreicated thanks.

These are also from 1996, so I am not sure if these are safe to take or not.
The only reason I would be taking them would be to potentiate Oxycodone.

I just phoned the pharmacist and I guess these two are NOT the same but are in the same family. Apparently I can buy Zantac (Ranitidine HCL) over the counter here in Canada, but I can't buy Cimetidine OTC here as it is prescription in Canada.

So, now I am wondering if Zantac (Ranitidine) would potentiate opiates at all? Specifically Oxycodone and Codeine.

No, ranitidine is not going to help much compared to cimetidine. wiki says that it only has 10% of the affinity the the CYP enzymes. Cimetidine isn't any good because it inhibits both the CYP3A4 and the CYP2D6 enzymes.. I would stick with the Grapefruit juice, which just inhibits mainly the CYP3A4 enzyme and eat some tums or some type of sodium bicarbonate antacid 20 minutes before administration. This is how I see it.

You don't want to inhibit your CYP2D6 enzyme because thats wut converts oxycodone -----> oxymorphone. Because of this, I don't think cimetidine or ranitidine is a good path to go to potentiate drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone, or codeine.

Instead you want to inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme with metabolizes the oxycodone to noroxycodone, a metabolite that has a weaker affinity to the mu-opioid receptor..

In summary 1 full glass of all natural White Grapefruit Juice one hour prior to adminitration and 4 tums 15-20 mins. prior to administration. there are some good threads about opiate potentiating. I'd search it.
