I'm trying hard to quit the old gunge, at least for a while, but am definitely struggling. I don't feel a craving per se, but am just bored and a bit depressed due to the abscence of weed. My doctor (a GP) is obsessed with trying to make me stop and has laid any number of issues onto my use of weed (usually one to three bongs a day) mainly my anxiety and panick syndrome. I attribute that more to rather heavy pyshchedelic use and a terrible salvia trip then with weed.

Any advice? I don't want to to stop but feel under immense rpessure to do so.
Has any one been in a situation like this? I am engaged in CBT at the moment and am concerned that the weed may effect the positive outcome of the treatment, which my psychologist seems to agree with.

However, they both (GP and psych) are more then happy to load me up with diazepam. Getting mixed signals here

Don't take the diazepam, just quit smoking weed. It'll do wonders for your anxiety, believe me. Any drug you use daily will screw you over subconsciously. If you planning on taking diazepam you might as well keep toking.

weed can defenatly causes anxiety and panic syndrom or whatever you have.

well "of course" the doc thinks his drugs are better than yours....but yah prescriptions are not any way less responsible for your paranoia/anxiety than weed is

Give it a try, why not. You'll undoubetdly gain something from the experience, even if it does come down to simply lowering your tolerance =P. It may or not may help, but it will deffinitely give you some sense of stabily.

Just smoke at night when you're alone and when you're drunk. Anxiety problems ? Gone.

Anxiety and social anxiety aren't one and the same, anxiety doesn't just go away when you smoke at night.

I think that the average doctor knows more about the pros and cons than the average DEA/anti-drug official/person.

i think the average doctor probably gets told what the pros and cons are by some dea/anti-drug official/person in the first place.

But is the average doctor uneducated? Does the average doctor know the truth about drugs? You can't really compare a regular joe who doesn't know jack shit about drugs and what they do to you and a doctor who spent over a decade of his/her life studying/learning about the human body, drugs, etc. The average doctor knows more about drugs than all of the DEA agents combined.

Look at michael's reply:

So no. They're not un-educated. They've been educated with the crappy government funded studies the DEA approved, in other words, a one-sided story, bull-shit, crap.

In this case though, I'd say the doctor is completely right. If you have anxiety issues and want to get rid of them, you should definitely try to give up weed because it simply isn't helping, it's detrimental to the cause, might even be the cause itself. You can get rid of the anxiety with benzo's, but you don't want to become dependant on benzo's for the anxiety you have because of the pot.

I would reccomend taht anyone with any type of "anxiety" issues, to not smoke weed, ... Stop smoking and it will greatly help your anxiety, trust me..

Everyone knows marijuana can make existing/creating anxiety worse

and blowmonkey is absolutely right..

You dont want to take benzos for weed induced anxiety..

Perhaps lay off the bud, see how you feel in a month then take it with your dr. from there..

take care

It seems like most people who start using benzo's have more anxiety when they stop using them, than they did when they started. Maybe that's just because I've read too many benzo addiction threads lately.

Like others have said, maybe a break from MJ is a good idea. Just for a little while at least, to see how things are, if your anxiety and any other problems clear up, then maybe you should try to use weed on a very very low basis if at all. I would proceed with caution if you go down the benzo route. It might end up being 'fun' for a little while, but after watching a friend get addicted to xanax very quickly, I tend to be cautious of the benzo's.

Weed has helped my anxiety before and it has caused it. When I become a heavy user it crops up if i dont smoke, than I taper off and I am fine.

Long story short...quit weed, start lifting/exercising, eat clean, take a multi-vitamin, some other supplements (alcar/r-ALA). I have done all thoose things and my OCD flair up calmed down in less than a week.

uh-huh. learning about medicine for however many years doesn't mean you're suddenly an expert on illegal drugs.

Problem is I've been on the benzo's now for at least five weeks (trying to stay to the prescribed dose, but my 'dark side' takes over sometimes :))

Though in quitting weed, I find I drink lots more alchohol (used to drink/get drunk once a week) now I've been having about five drinks a night. Plus valium.

I know its bad- but it feels pretty good.

In truth, I'm scared to stop taking diazepam, I've already quit my job to try and deal with this shit, which unfortunately appears to be worsening, so if I abruptly stop taking diazepam who knows what will happen? As a naturally anxious person, its going to be hard to tell if I will experience withdrawal or just my natural mindset.

Fucking drugs.

yeh, you can have social anxiety, or general anxiety. I feel like I have general anxiety, but it's only pushed into panic/anxiety attact disorder when social anxiety builds upon it( like theatres and crowded bright stores).

its worth quitting if you are suffering. Its still hard to quit tho. Good luck. Try to stop, and if you fail, try to keep it to a single event rather than falling back into a daily ritual. Save if for special ocassions.

Depends on the doctor. Each doctor would have a different knowledge of illegal drugs on the body. Some even used and still use illegal drugs if thats so hard to believe. The better the doctor, the more knowledgable they should be on the facts, not bias opinions, of using illegal drugs in order to help his/her patients. The information is availible to them, so I don't know why someone who cared wouldn't look into it.
