Hi there. I'm quitting smoking, and was wondering if my damaged voice was permanent or not? I'm a 22 year old female, 23 mid Feb and have been smoking daily for about 5 years now. I'm lucky to have no serious effects from this, but have noticed my voice is a lot deeper from smoking.

I was wondering if other members had noticed the hoarseness and masculinity of my voice will go away in time? What are your experiences with this?

Thanks x

I think at 22, after smoking for only five year, that you are likely to recover 100% and be perfectly normal.
Congrats, BTW, on your decision to quit smoking, it's a biggie.

Im not too sure about the voice thing, but my guess is your voice will probably return to normal in time. Here's something I found interesting-

I quit smoking after about 10 years of smoking. I'm not sure how long it took for my voice to recover, but I would say that now (about 8 years after quitting) it's back in full. Staying away from second hand smoke could help a lot too. Congrats on quitting!

You can do it!!

I'm guessing it's just from your voice box being irritated by the constant smoke.

Are you using patches, gum, lozenges, or inhalator?

Thank you! I'm hoping to take part in the London marathon this year, so really think giving up will help me with that too. I'm just using normal gum, tapering down off my roll ups and keeping record of how much I smoke. I'm going to the doctors tomorrow so will find out about the nhs stop smoking things they have and try and get some patches.

Very cool. Good luck with the marathon as well. Nicotine patches are amazing at really dulling your cravings by having consistent levels of nicotine released in to your blood stream. But when you really need something in your mouth, that's where gum comes in handy. You can use the patches and gum in conjunction. Of course you could only use the gum 2-3 times a day when you are REALLY craving a cig as obviously too much nicotine can make you feel very sick. Are you doing the chew 4 times and park it between your gums and cheek for the gum right now?
