Quick meth synthesis question

Out of curiosity, why is it said that d-Methamphetamine cannot be derived from vicks inhalers? I read that they no longer contained l-desoxyephedrine but on the package it says it contains "levmetamfetamine". Thats the same as l-desoxyephedrine, isnt it? Couldnt you theoretically reflux it into methylamine and then reduce it? Is this just a shitty low yield method?

i'm pretty sure that it's just too hard to do
and besides (i'm sure u know this already but)the l and d refer to where the carbon-carbon double bonds are.
so for that to work u need to change where the bonds are.
it seems much easier to throw a bunch of match pack scrapings, iodine, diet pills, and cleaner together.
(yes i do know the actual chems used, but i wanna hear a story of how some 13 y/o punk tried to mix shit together)
