I am new to this site and have been debating coming on here for quite some time now. I suffer from panic attacks and was self medicating with xanax obtained from a freind for a couple weeks before going to my doctor and seeing a psychologist. After doing this they put me on 1 mg of alaprozalam a day. I have been taking this dose daily for about a month now and have read some really scary stories regarding addiciton. Now I am having panic attacks about being on medicine for panic attscks. I have about 25 of them left and here is where my question arises. Will I be ok to just stop taking them without serious or mild wirhdrawl if so what will I experience and secondly would it be better to wean down using what I have left . My doctor has offered no support for my concern. I now turn to the experts on here desperate for answers as I own a business and cannot be a non functioning person otherwise my lively good is at stake. Hope to hear from someone as soon as possiblle . Much love and thanks ahead of time

Hi and welcome!

Since its only been a month at 1mg you could try to stop taking them but i would recommend a quick taper. take 0.5mg tomorrow and see if you feel any different, if you don't, stay at that dose for a few days then try .25, then half that dose .125. You could also start at 0.75mg and taper from there. Once you stop taking them you might suffer some withdrawal symptoms, insomnia, heightened anxiety, agitation, paranoia, etc. Of course you will also still have the same problems you had before taking the medication.

Another thing you could do is ask to switch to a longer acting benzo (clonazepam, valium) for a few weeks.

Good luck!
