So, I keep hearing around these forums that Benzos make the effects of Opiates more potent when taken together.

I was wondering to what degree that's actually true... By that I mostly mean: Do most people just feel like taking both Benzos & Opiates together make eachother have more potent effects, or is there actually some kind of scientific explination behind it, like do the two different chemicals actually interact in ways that make the effects of both stronger?

I'm not so much looking for people's individual experiences & opinions [although those ARE always at least somewhat helpful], but moreso for actual facts behind that whole claim.

One works on the opioid system by binding to different opioid receptors, the main one being the mu receptor. Benzos work on GABA system by binding to certain receptors and enhancing GABA's effects.

They both cause drowsiness, and so there is more drowsiness and heaviness when mixing them. I feel that benzos kind of drag them down. Many people love to mix them, though.

For me, Benzo's ruin my opiate high, unless I take the benzos a few hours after taking the opiates.

Sorry...don't have any scientific data.

Hmm this could explain why I just wasted a whole bottle of vicodin chasing a high....I was taking 1mg kpin with every dose expecting it to potentiate....

Well theyre two different drugs, that act on differently in the body... benzos relieve anxiety, are good muscle relaxers in some cases and can be hynotic they are also CNS depressants... opiates are euphoric, and are also CNS depressants,

so combining the two, you'll be nodding harder, because of the added sedation, furthermore the muscle relaxing properties of valium for example are very pleasant when taken with an opiate..

but if you'e going to combine the two, you must diminish your usual dose of each product, to not risk OD from CNS depression

I take my clonazepam around two hours after taking my methadone, thus clonaz taking effect approx at the same time as methadone.
