I take 2mg of klonopin daily for anxiety, sometimes up to 3mg if I need it. I was just wondering, can drinking coffee decrease it's potency and take away from the way a benzo is supposed to work? (because it's an upper + downer)

I know drinking caffeine can worsen anxiety and I'm trying to quit because I know it does for me, but I was just wondering if it could take away from the uses of a benzo like klonopin.

it might make you more alert and thus make the sedating effects less noticeable, but it should not have any real effect on the drug's effectiveness.

panic in charleston this weekend too, would like to do both

without getting too detailed, are u a current student or did u attend cu? if so, approx when did (should you have) graduate(d)?

I dont understand whats going on here? Are you people talking about college sports events?

oh, and they're talking about a combination of washed up jam bands, clemson football and the affects of caffine with kpins.

this thread really has it all.

I graduated HS in '04 and went to college for a few years, not at Clemson though. Dropped out and just worked, but I'm goin back to school in the spring. Just a big Clemson fan is all, grew up that way.

No, my question was actually a serious question and if anyone has anything to say I'm still listening. He asked me if I went to Clemson though so I replied, lol.

that's cool. i went there for undergrad- it was great. i haven't decided if i'm going to make the miami game or not, but it's definitely on the list of weekend possibilities. back on topic, i believe caffeine could only potentially decrease your perception of the effectiveness of the drug (bc it might make you more awake, etc.) but would not actually interfere w/ the kpin working or anything like that.

Since coffe contains caffeine which is a drug, and is a stimulant, there actually is alot more of a reaction going on between the two substances than you might realize. The stimulant effects of the coffe will tend to make the sedating, anxiolitic effects of the klonopin less apparent....therefore, effectively reducing its actual impact on your body. And since the klonopin was meant to act on your body in a relaxing, calming, way.....I would say that the caffeine actually does reduce its effectiveness.

Of course this all depends on how much you are taking of each drug, and at what times, etc...but a quick answer is yes, coffee(caffeine) has the ability to counteract the effets of an anxiolitic drug such as klonopin.

Cool.. yeah I'm tryin to lay off the caffeine because it's only making my anxiety worse, or at least tricking me into thinking it is, and I'm taking the klonopin to help with it. So it's sort of like I'm going against my own medicine.

As far as the game Saturday, Miami is loaded and I'm worried, but we have a good team too (shoulda beat Auburn). Gonna be a great game. That's cool you went to Clemson, Go Tigers. Sorry, I know most ppl probably don't give a rat's ass about CU football on here, so I'll leave that topic alone now.

Thanks jamesBrown, that makes sense. I'm really trying to cut out the caffeine now because I feel it does counteract the medicine. Thanks for the reply.

james, i agree that it could alter the user's perception of its effectiveness, but i don't believe caffeine would actually alter any of the gaba-type effects on the body- like how drinking coffee when you're drunk can make you feel more sober but has no effect on how drunk (or not drunk) you actually are

I agree wiht you completely...but the problem is that all it takes is altering the users perception of how they feel for the drugs effectiveness to not work as well.

Example.....You are prescribed klonopin to keep you calm and anxiolitic....yet when you take coffee, it increases your heartrate, and gets you more stimulated(i.e. exactly the opposite of what the klonoin in supposed to do)...so even though the klonopin is still doing its job, you, as a person, cant feel the calming effects of the klonopin very well anymore becaus they are masked by the coffee's stimulatory effects. My point being, the two drugs may still be doing EXACTLY what they were supposed to do when taken together, its just that compete with each other, and whichever has the more overpowering effects, is the one you will "feel" the most, and even if you "feel" the klonopin the most over the coffee, the coffee can still be masking part of the klonpin's effects.

*My point being that "altering the users perception of its effectiveness"(like you said), is all it takes to actually make a change on how you actually "feel" the klonopin working. And thats all that matters, how you feel, not how the drug is actually working.

Do you see the point im trying to make? Its a little difficult for me to explain it.

that's a completely valid point. in fact, some doctors will prescribe things like methylphenidate or recommend using caffeine to counteract some of the sedating effects of benzos, but unless you're talking about mountains of caffeine, i don't think it should have any real effect on the anxiolitic properties of klonopin, although i'm not disclosing the possibility and i completely understand what you're saying.

to the OP, if you feel like it's making it work less in your case, i'd recommend just avoiding it.
