I know that the EZ-Test is only intended to detect the presence of MDXX, and not the quality or quantity of MDxx in the pill. However... if I test 2 pills... one turns dark purplish/black immediately just like it's supposed to and the other sort of takes a little longer and it doesn't get quite as dark... isn't it reasonable to assume that one pill is better than the other? What else would likely cause that kind of a difference in test results?

I would think about that one for a moment...
See the problem with using a colorimetric spot test kit (like marquis reagent etc..) for anything other than the presence or absence of a substance is a real hit or miss... Things like binding agents, and drug mixes are also causes for there being a difference in the colour / speed of the reaction.
Example.. when I got my first test kit (which was after having moved to the UK) I tested a pill which I had left from Canada.
It tested to light purple with no bubbles or smoke.
This pill however was stronger than any pill I've ever had here in the UK, and only after finding out that the pill had a high amount of methamphetamine did I then understand.
Colour is not an indication of strength.
