Benzos Question to the Benzo experts out there...

Recently I was prescribed 15 .25mg Xanax for breakthrough panic attacks and 10mg Buspirone for everyday anxiety. The Xanax works wonders for breakthrough episodes but doesn't last long. The Buspirone gives me such bad nausea and headaches that I can't even take them w/o wanting to kill myself...literally. The next time I see my doctor should I ask him for Klonopin, something that will last all day and control my anxiety better? Any advice is appreciated. :)

Tell the doc the adverse affects you're having and he'll give you something that works.

If the Xanax isn't cutting it, mention that as well. Try not to label yourself a drug-seeker. Not the most noble title.

Yeah I was acting all sketched about taking pills so I don't think he gets that vibe from me yet so I would think I'm good. I just can't believe that the Buspirone sucks that bad. The way he talked about it, it was supposed to be a non-addictive wonder drug and the only thing it does is make me feel worse...:!

I just really hope that he will listen to the research I've done and get me right :(

I think most doctors wouldn't mind letting you try clonazepam in place of alprazolam, but I am going to put it to you like this;

Tell your doctor what happened, really, with the buspirone. Look into the paperwork that came with your prescription. What you experienced is probably a known side effect. Describe the severity of it, be truthful. From what you say it sounds pretty bad.

TBH, just be honest with your doctor. If he's giving you alprazolam, he doesn't have you figured as a drug seeking person. :)

Update:

Yesterday I was driving down the interstate when some asshole cut me off and nearly caused me to wreck. Even on the Buspirone (which I ABHOR) I still had a panic attack, had to stop on the side of the road, smoke a cigarette and wait until I felt like I wasn't falling off of a cliff with no parachute before I could get to my appointment (for which I was 20 minutes late). I thought this stuff was supposed to work at least a little... This is ridiculous! :X:X:X

Its all about being honest with your doctor/find the right doctor, and for me age is a big thing. My family doctor has prescribed me valium, restoril, and halcion in the past because i have had similar problems with non-benzo anti anxiety/anti depressants (woke up to panic attacks and couldn't get to sleep due to anxiety). Recently i have been seeing a pysch, who treats me like a little kid(20 yrs old) and every time i say i don't want to take another ssri or buspar, she seems to push it even farther saying "well your body is different now then a few years ago." My family doctor understands perfectly, but my pysch won't take no for an answer.

my bad for my little rant, but i know how frustrating it can be to get the right medicine for certain things, but if your honest with your doc, building a bond( or get lucky with a benzo friendly doc), you should be able to come to a median between his/her view and yours. Good luck!

Full effects of Buspirone take approximately 3-4 weeks to be noticed.

It is not a benzo, but it can help with anxiety in much the same way as an SSRI, but does not have a discontinuation syndrome.

I don't think it will help you as you are having panic attacks.

IMO, Buspirone is crap. Little more than a placebo. I legitimately use .25-.50mg alprazolam for anxiety as needed also and it works wonders, although yes it works for a pretty short period. No other benzo is as effective for anxiety as far as I'm concerned, and I've tried the majority. Other benzos just make me feel dopey or muddled even at a low dose.

I would try bumping your dose up to .50mg as needed, and if that doesn't make a difference ask about something else. In all truthfulness benzos are not exactly the best drug to be taking every day; better to get in the habit of using it once in a while when it gets really bad. Just my .02 from personal experience, YMMV

Maybe ask about hydroxyzine.. it's an antihistamine that is used for anxiety.
It works pretty well as I take it myself in combo with clonidine daily to reduce anxiety, and for breakthrough I have valium. So maybe that's something you can talk to your Dr. about. Good luck :)

EDIT: I'm also on Zyprexa for bipolar disorder and that helps anxiety also.
It's an antipsychotic so it would probably be over kill to use for just anxiety but if you have bad anxiety that causes loss of sleep or insomnia than maybe a low dose of it at bedtime could help.
It has a long half-life so it would also continue working into the next day to keep you calm. Im just rambling now.. sorry lol.

I've stopped taking the Buspirone due to the godawful side-effects so I don't think I'll be giving any drugs even remotely related to it a shot. When I talk to him I wonder if asking him about Klonopin for daily use and Xanax/Valium for breakthrough panic attacks would be a good idea. I took K-pins (illegitimately) for a few days and it worked wonders, especially the length of time they lasted. I just wonder how I should approach him about what I think would be best for me. Although benzos are habit-forming, at this point I'm desperate to take anything powerful enough to allow me to live a normal life...:(

I dunno about hydroxyzine, I took it for a little while and had all sorts of strange side effects, including RLS, which really sucked.

Not saying it couldn't work for you, but it didn't for me

Be careful, benzodiazepine dependency actually makes anxiety worse. So try your hardest to not get dependent on the benzos because you'll regret it in the future.

Benzos are great for PRN (as needed) use. Using them daily/often ruins the efficacy of benzos in treating anxiety disorders and leads to nasty dependence which you'll come to despise.

Update:

So I went to my doc today about that shitty Buspirone and got him to write me a script of 28 .25mg Klonopins, which will last 2 weeks when taken as directed, but he then told me that he was not going to write me any more benzo scripts "due to their abusive nature" so what am I supposed to do in two weeks when I run out and have panic attacks with nothing to help me???:X
I was thinking about going to see another doctor but I don't want to be told the same thing over and over....when I call to make an appointment should I ask what their policy on prescribing benzos would be? :(

^^No, that may raise a red flag for "drug seeker"...

Use the Klonopin as you need them and go back in, talk to your doc. A lot of doctors are squeamish about benzos and such, but if he sees you are benefiting from them it may end up that he's willing to work something out.

If you decide to see another doctor, just wait until he or she asks about medical history and tell them that you were prescribed Klonopin, depending on their practices there's a good chance they will be willing to continue you on it.

Don't discount what everyone else is saying. If you take benzos every day eventually you will become dependent on them and your anxiety will simply worsen. Of course I don't have too much info about your situation but I would encourage you to explore therapy if you are willing / can afford the costs, or simply getting rid of anxiety through another outlet. There are other medical options but you shouldn't think medicine alone will offer a permanent fix. Just my opinion based on life experience & observation. Benzos can offer a wonderful respite in the worst of times, but overuse / misuse will come back to bite you in the ass every time.

In Russia, Phenazepam takes you!

Squeamish would be a total understatement haha. He was a doctor in Russia and recently moved to the U.S. and he was talking about the damage Phenazepam has done over there. He said there was no way I would ever get another script of benzos from him. I'm not sure what to do. I have good insurance so maybe I will get a second, third, or fourth opinion. The way that these magical substances has improved my quality of life is simply amazing, although I can see the dark side associated with long-term use....:(

By the way I go to the gym daily and I do see a therapist to try and work my anxiety issues out but nothing else has seemed to work aside from pills...:(

^ I hear you brother, I've suffered from anxiety for a long time with little beneficial treatment.

At least you got benzos though, here in Australia I find it VERY hard to get them prescribed. In fact the only time I've been RX'd them is when I ended up in psych ward on Sunday. :|

Damn Mr. Blonde, maybe that's where I need to go to get what I need. I just can't believe he wouldn't put me on a trial period and see if it helped. The only reason he Rx'ed the K-pins was because I have exams coming up and I'm even more fucked up than normal.

^ love the avatar, by the way! one of the best albums ever produced by human hands %)
