Question regarding Anti-Depressants (SSRI's)

I know this sounds kind of weird, but is it possible for a lower dose of a certain SSRI to be more effective than a higher dose?

Example:

When took my first anti-depressant (Citalopram 20mg), while it took about 1 1/2 months to work, it worked wonders for my depression and anxiety. I was sleeping good and waking up early with ease, was eating very good and had a great outlook on life.

Fast forward 3 months later....after a discontinuation period of citalopram, I decided that I did infact need an anti-depressant to feel somewhat normal. So I tried 10mg of lexapro (no effect), 75mg of effexor xr (horrible side effects and no relief, plus a horrible discontinuation syndrome), and finally went back on citalopram thinking that it would work again due to it working the first time around. Only difference is I took 40mg this time vs. 20mg the first time around.

Even after 2 months, I felt no relief from depression nor from anxiety like I did the first time taking a lower dosage. Does anyone have any input on this? Maybe certain circumstances in my life changed the way I felt, so maybe the 20mg really was just a placebo effect the whole time? Doesn't really make sense to me.
