Question on Ambien

On the Border of Indecision, thank you Jimmy!
I am on a script of one 10mg of Ambien at night. For some reason, and I don't know if it's the combination with my pain meds or not, but it still takes me 2-4 hours to fall asleep after taking the Ambien. I've actually taken another half from time to time but no real improvement in wanting to sleep. It's kind of strange. My question is if 10mg is a low daily dose or is it typical to be on more than that? Thanks BL!

10mg is the normal dose and docs usually don't prescribe more than that. On some occasions, I've heard of doctors prescribing 15mg-20mg. To get the best effects, don't eat for 4 hours before or 1 hour after you take it

Heck I didn't know that! I was never given any specific directions. I usually eat dinner anywhere from 7-10pm at night and take my night dose no later than 10-11pm. Although I don't usually eat much afterwards. I really wonder if that's what's going on here. Thanks for the info and btw, is that from experience or is it a part of the official paperwork with the drug?

Personal experience which I have loads of. It also says on the bottle to take on an empty stomach (on mine at least). Most meds work better on an empty stomach fyi

If I were you when I would try and take it later in the evening. Possible as the last thing you do before you go to bed. Why? Well, I´m glad you ask as I have nothing better to do than writing on bluelight.

I find that Ambien (Zolpidem) is great to induce sleep but it has (at least) one big short coming being that the "window" where it helps you sleep is short. I find that then I take 5-10 mg then 30 mins later this "window" will be open but within 2 hours (from taking it) the window will shut and it will be even harder to open again than if you had not ingested the Zolpidem at all to begin with. Its not a problem for me as I go to bed within this timeframe and fall a sleep rather quickly here after. In your case however, I can imagine that the effect will start to wear off before you are able to fall a sleep.

Just my 2 cents I quess....

Same here. Got some samples from the doc and it said on the package to take on an empty stomach.

crestfallen, Do you have experience in higher doses than 10mg at once? I only took 10mg and took it 4 fucking hours to kick in. I'm looking for a lil buzz before it puts me to sleep. (already aware there is cannabis as an option)

I've also tried melatonin before and although it works really good, it sadly gives me fucked up dreams I did not like. Like ones that are so fucking lucid and deep you know you are dreaming, but are finding it impossible to awake.

Thanks for taking the time everyone. As for the warning/instructions on the bottle, I take so much shit that if the doc or pharmacists doesn't say something, I don't usually pay any mind. I know that might sound crazy but if I took the time to read all my bottles, it'd be a full-time job!

Update: I just checked my bottle and no-go. Only a warning about driving and don't give to anyone else. Again, not like I really paid any attention to those things but I was curious at this point.

You gotta try to go to sleep right after you take it, if you don't than yeah it's gonna make you do stupid shit lol. It makes me see things and act like like I'm drunk. I hate it, it sucks:)

Empty stomach is pretty important. Also, you do build up a tolerance to Z-drugs over time. I wouldn't go higher than 10 mg (except the 12.5 mg CR), you can have memory "black-outs" the next morning at work, driving, etc. like Xanax. I would give Lunesta a try.

Ambien is awesome but its one prob is the fast tolerance buildup but thats mostly when constantly increasing dosage like for rec use. At one point my tolerance was so high i was taking 7 tabs at a time for a decent buzz. Once after passing out i awoke at hospital since my mother though i had OD'ed. Was fine due to tolerance but it was a legit concern with that QTY.

Usually new users need only half a tab for good sleep though but everybody is different. But yeah try go to bed when you take it as it wears off quite fast. As i used to take it and stay awake id notice it was mostly worn after about 1-2 hours.

I do not know how long you have been taking Ambien for, or whether or not there is some cross-tolerance you might have to Ambien's effects. For me, having a fairly large benzo tolerance, Ambien has no real amnesic effect on me nor a very strong (though perceptible) hypnotic effect, and I attribute this to substantial cross-tolerance developed by benzo's because Ambien is VERY MUCH like a benzo (but, it technically isn't). Now, at a dose of 10 mg +, it makes me feel as if I could fall asleep if I wanted to do so, but never "knocks me out". It is true that Ambien is short-acting, really, and the best time to utilize its hypnotic properties is within about an hour of dosing as it hits quickly and part of that quick onset from a baseline level is what helps one to fall asleep - it seems that Ambien begins working within 15 min. to 30 min. (if not sooner, at times) for me, on an empty stomach. And, yes, it is much more effective on an empty stomach. So, in short, to use it best, wait until your ready to go to sleep to take it, try to have as little on your stomach as possible, and go with the flow of the initial onset of action so as to sort of drop into sleep.

BUT, the pain medication you said you've been taking could be causing problems in falling and/or staying asleep; if you began taking anything new, and the insomnia worsened shortly after, I would tend to think it would be the new agent and not the Ambien losing its efficacy.

BTW: If 10 mg Ambien is still able to cause significant memory lapses or fogginess, even if infrequent, I would tend not to increase your dose anymore; if it isn't exhibiting side-effects and the level of desired effect, you could increase your dose to 15 mg; but, most doc's will not go above 10 mg of the instant-release, only to the 12.5 mg Ambien CR.
