Question about medical marijuana

I live in AZ and was thinking about getting my card. I have read however that even though you may have marijuana prescribed, it is still illegal to possess under federal law?

I would only get my card so I could smoke in my apartment and not have to worry about getting in trouble. Is the card just what I need?

Can somebody clarify the law exactly? It is legal or it isn't with a prescription? What does a prescription really do for you if it is illegal? I'm not planning on ever possessing any large amount, just a very casual smoker, and I want to know if it would be a good idea for me to get my card.

this is not really a topic for cannabis discussion. It looks to me like you are asking if something is legal in arizona or not...or if federal law trumps arizona law. It does. try a local source to find the information you are looking for. a regional authority would be of more help to you..
