Question about hormones and growth

Hey guys, this is something that has been bothering me a lot recently. I was hoping some people with knowledge of steroid use could give me some advice.

When I was 19, I noticed the beginnings of hair loss manifesting. My brother who is 4 years older than me has a fairly receded hair line. At a time my obsession and paranoia of going bald in my teens got the better of me, and I jumped on propecia (finasteride - a DHT inhibitor). I had a few side effects including a degree of gyno. I reduced the dose, and even took it every few days instead of every day. I was quite inconsistent, which probably also wasn't smart. I used it for around a year, then just quit.

Anyway now I'm 21 and I worry that it has stunted my growth. I still have the body of a teenage boy, whereas my friends have thickened up and filled out a lot more. I am tall enough, just above average height, but my bones are so thin and small for my height, my hands and feet are tiny, my knees and shoulders are tiny etc.

I have always been thin, with small hands and feet, but average height. When I was growing up I never looked like the small guy in comparison to people around me. I was slender, but had a decent height with decent shape with broad enough shoulders. I always pictured that my height was an indicator that in later years I would thicken up / my bones in my hands and feet would enlarge a bit. I have two older brothers who are much taller than me, and have much bigger bone structure. They've always been bigger than me, but now the comparison is so much more pronounced

Anyway - basically my theory is that the gyno signified an increase in estrogen that can come with DHT inhibitors like finasteride. This increase in estrogen at the age of 19 promoted closure of my growth plates prematurely. I'm a bit of a hippie deep down, and I can't stand the idea that my fear induced use of drugs has potentially messed with my natural growth and development.

Posters who are knowledgeable about steroids and hormones and growth- do you think DHT inhibitors can stunt growth in this way?

I am going to see an endocrinologist and check out my hormone levels. Though the last thing I want to do is start messing with my hormones again, what do you think of the idea of using a small amount of growth hormone at my age to thicken up my bones and fill out somewhat?

It is possible that by eradicating DHT more estrogen would be created as a reult of the increase of test. This could possibly close your growth plates. However I don't recon that your smaller hands/feet/bones have much to do with this- more likely is a naturally lower level of GH (which an increase in estrogen would have little effect on). A more femanine appearance and a lack of masculine features could be a result of lower DHT levels. Would GH increase the size of your hands/feet - maybe. Would I recommend it- probably not. Talk to your endocrinologist..

If you want to fill out more- eat more and go to the gym...

Your doctor would probably put you on testosterone replacement therapy long before putting you on GH.

Honestly man, GH is not going to help you much. That stuff is way overhyped. Yes professional bodybuilders use it, but most of them are combining it with insulin (very dangerous btw) and in large doses for months and months on end.

If you want to thicken up testosterone is your ticket. You can release endogenous testosterone (ie from within) by lifting real hard (squats, bench, deadlift). Ease into it at first, but once you've got form down start lifting like a fucking animal. You'll notice after a few months your voice deepen, more hair will grow on your freakin shoulders and back (kind of unruly if you ask me!) and your muscles will start holding more glycogen stores (ie they'll get bigger!).

And P-Mo has the money advice with the eat more suggestion.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys, they've been informative. I think there might be something to p-mo's advice regarding DHT and masculinisation of my appearance. I still think that a spike in estrogen at 19 could have easily stunted my growth or masculinisation of my body, but I'll wait for a professional opinion on that.

I am already going to the gym and trying to eat more, but honestly I don't think that's going to help what I percieve as my problem. I quite like my physique already, I have a six pack, though I'd like to be broader, i've been told I have a nice V shape, etc. I have visible muscles from push ups, chin ups, walking on my hands, even when I don't go to the gym. It's just it's all on a small scale in comparison to everyone else, and that never used to be the case so much. I'm above average height, but my hands and feet are the size of a girl or an early teenager's, and my bones are at least as thin as most girls. How will I ever look like a man at such a size, no matter how much I work out my large muscle groups?

I usually don't worry about it, but it's been getting to me recently. A couple of times people have commented when shaking hands "wow, you have really small hands!" and once a guy even just mentioned it whilst looking at me. My friend brought it out of the blue and compared hand sizes... "yeah...that's really weird." In a more humorous encounter, a girl shook hands with me recently joked that I must have a tiny penis! Luckily this isn't the case :p But still, people obviously notice it as well, and like me, they find it friggin weird.

I'd do anything to increase my hand, feet and bone size. While I'm waiting on a professional opinion and or getting my hormones tested, I'm going to go to the gym, try to eat more including a protein shake, and maybe get some arginine and lysine (which I believe are thought to increase GH release). who knows what can be done at age 21, but hopefully it'll all do something

what a bitch who would joke to a dude that they jsut met he has a small penis! people amaze me 8o

I'm not sure there's much you can do to increase your bones at this point.

If you pack on some muscle (eating a lot and lifting HARD) AND you build more confidence, you can have any woman you want, no matter how short or thin framed you are and other people will respect you.

I feel you man on the small frame. Three years ago I was 120lbs 5'7". I have to fight for every pound, but I'm at 150 now and still gaining slowly (actually quickly lately with test shots but thats besides the point! :D).

Cheers for the responses guys. I've been eating more and hitting up the gym recently, and it's been going well. I haven't seen an endocrinologist yet so my growth stunt fears are still there bugging me a bit.

I want to maximise my natural GH levels. Even if my bones have finished growing in length, I'd like them to be as thick (or as dense) as possible for later in life, since they're naturally very slight. I've been working out and sleeping well, which I believe is the main thing.

Do the amino acids (such as glutamine, arginine) which supposedly increase GH secretion work? Or am I getting enough of those simply from a protein shake?

I think you're probably getting enough if you have a high protein diet. Arginine works as a vasodilator though, which will increase the 'pumps' you get in the gym which could possibly increase nutrient shuttling (my theory at least but it seems to work well for that).

Take in dairy for extra calcium if you want to increase bone density.

I don't believe finasteride used at normal dosing would cause you to have a small frame due to premature closing of growth plates. I can't prove it, but I don't think it would happen. A small amount of HGH will not change this and even a large amount, which you wouldn't get scripted for and probably wouldn't want to pay for in any case, I don't believe would alter it to significantly. If you could get HGH to grow your hands and feet it would probably also grow your head and alter your facial structure. We are all made differently. Start focusing on your positives and not your weaknesses. You'll be happier in the long run.

Hey Jozza. Comparing any part of your anatomy to your friends is not really going to do you any good.

You are far better off comparing your hand, foot and general bone size with your father, brothers and uncles if you have them. They at least share some genetics with you.

Quite possibly you'll "thicken up" with age. When I was 21 I was as skinny as a rake. All the usual jokes like having to run around in the shower to get wet etc. It's just the way I was at that age. All my energy went into growing taller I guess. No one says anything like that anymore.
