so i wanna go to the doctor to get some help with my depression. i got it bad too. shitty thoughts all day everyday. ive heard that if i tell my doctor that i have suicidal thoughts as much as i do hes gonna put me in an in patient program and i cannot do that. it would do more damage than good cause i could be discharged from the military cause of it. so should i even tell him im havin bad thoughts or just say im depressed and get some happy pills?

If you're suicidal you should address it now. There are worse things than an honourable discharge. If you have PTSD or general depression your best bet is first seeing a therapist and failing that trying medications.

The fact that your job requires you to carry a gun puts you in a dangerous situation here. Firearms are the leading cause of male suicides.

im not gonna say im suicidal but its like id rather be dead than feel like shit. and it wont be honorable itll be medical or general and bein an 11b is one of the few things that still makes me happy so i really dont wanna fuck that up

are you going in to see a psychiatrist or just a general practioner?

if the former, just be honest. if you're having just suicidal ideation ("i don't plan on blowing my head off, but i sometimes feel like i'd be better off not being alive") no one's going to hold you in the psych ward. now, the key though is that if you are feeling that way, you don't have - there's several really effective treatments for depression.

if its the latter, go to a psychiatrist instead or get a referral to a psychiatrist.

general prac. i dont have the money to see anyone else. and yea its like that. id never be able to off myself its just like id feel better off. ima see what my doc says and go from there. thanks for the input

No need to say the word "suicidal" unless you're consumed with thoughts of self-harm or plan to attempt it. Just say you're extremely depressed, cannot function normally and need help.

Keep in mind that 99% of physicians will prescribe an SSRI or anti-psychotic and offer no further help because they're not mental health experts. If it's as bad as it sounds, you should work toward seeing a mental health professional ASAP.
