Question About Amphetamine and Urinary Retention

Hey, new to Bluelight and this is my first thread!

I'm curious as to why amphetamines cause urinary retention. When I take any form of amphetamine it's a real bitch to pee! It's not as bad with methylphenidate but with any type of amphetamine (or any stimulant) urinating is damn near impossible. I'm aware that d/l amphetamine cause vasoconstriction (as does methylphenidate) so does the fact that amphetamine constricts blood vessels have anything to do with urinary retention?

In the short term, it probably involves the neurotransmitters amphetamine increases activity of, primarily dopamine and norepinephrine. These two eithwr directly prevent things like bladder emptying and relaxation of the muscle around the urethra that are necessary for urination or "override" the neurotransmitters that cause such things to happen, primarily acetylcholine.

If we are talking long term use/abuse these same substances probably interfere with signals sent between the brain and urinary system.

OP, I'm on amphetamine also. May I ask what type of amp and what dosage is creating these effects for you? I'm myself, on occasion have a real time of it going pee, but most of the time, the side effects are minimal.

For me stimulants tend to be diuretic, leading to frequent urination and (fortunately) a healthy thirst. As clonidine (a good med to have for overstimulation, vasoconstriction or resting PNS stimulation and comedown/crash btw) counters this effect I´d suggest its of adrenergic origin. But I get that small penis syndrome from amphetamine too, guess what you are experiencing is related to adrenergic vasoconstriction.

Opioids and dextromethorphan (in higher doses) caused urinary retention for me. DXM is heavy on norepinephrine, but with the opioids it must be a different mechanism.

Can't provide an answer myself but have also experienced this on a prescribed dose of mixed amphetamine salts. For me, urinary retention started after a few days at 30mg per day.

It acts upon inputs to the pontine micturition center. You won't have that problem if you try peeing when heating the area where your bladder/urethra are while taking a warm/hot shower.
