Let’s say you have life milestones easily within reach and your addiction/dependency under decent control (let’s say you’re on subs or methadone for the opiate addicts). You have all your basic needs met, job etc.

Whateve life milestone it may be; things such as getting married, getting in shape; going to or finishing school; upgrading your career; a big purchase like a car or a home; rewarding yourself with a nice vacation; giving yourself something you feel you’ve earned in life and have all the means and time to get but you just don’t pull the trigger.

The reason you put all this on hold is because you are dependent on drugs and abuse drugs,,,,you keep telling yourself it’s too much responsibility to take this next life milestone until you get fully clean. The problem is that day of getting fully clean never seems to come and the years keep passing you by without you realizing your dreams. Let me emphasize it’s not the drugs making it so you can’t have these things…it’s you placing a limit against yourself of either having one or the other…not allowing your life to unfold until you leave the drugs behind; but you stay stuck where you are as the years go by.

The solution seems easy…just pull the trigger and live life for the day regardless of what is going on with your addiction, if you’re not out of control, broke and homeless why deny yourself things you might deserve just because of this one flaw you have?

Can anyone else relate to this?

I ve completed my BA- my first Master and my PhD almost always smoking smack ( on and off but more on than off). I ve lived in 3 countries and I ve travelled quite a little. Don t let the " when I ll get sober " thinh stop you ( unless of course you re travelling ad yu are addicted to , say, heroin, but if you are addicted to pills you can travel with, do it). Don t let this thing drag you down more than its unavoidable.

If you had an alcohol problem would you talk this way? and alcoholics are a fucking mess, any more than " us". Lex dubia non obligat ( dubious law is not an obligation) said the Latin, and prohibitionists laws are ot even dubious , are just wrong. You have a weakness like any human being, this does not mean that you don t deserve shit you ve earned.

Great reply and a lot of the fear does come from the situation society has created surrounding narcotics not maybe from the actual situation/addiction inside me per se.

With opioids even legal ones there’s this fear that they will be removed at any second for no reason other than politics and of course your life will come crashing down…alcoholics don’t have that fear because their drugs is available worldwide always and forever.

But if you step back and look at it maintenance opioids have been around a long time and haven’t gone anywhere.

The fear of losing them just because of some bullshit laws is immense though and it has happened in the past to myself and many ppl.

But it’s been 15 years or something and it hasn’t happened, maintenance opioids were always atainable when needed…it might never happen. I’m making up future problems that haven’t and may never happen.

What they re doing in the US is ABSURD ( u from there right?) but what should they do, cancel replacement therapy?Very unlikely , but even if there are other options, maybe eve better than methadone.
We druggies are resourceful !
But please don t let society enter into your head and make you think that you re a worthless junkie scum undeserving of anything good because you re not , especially if you are using replacement drugs and are ok from a legal point of view and unless are hurting other people, which I don t think is the case. If you plan to travel to Brazil let me know :)
