I would like to start another thread discussing peoples experiences with purchasing syringes in their various states.
THIS IS NOT A THREAD TO ASK ABOUT YOUR LAWS IN YOUR STATE, THIS INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND EASILY IN OTHER THREADS WITH A QUICK SEARCH (AND TO BE HONEST SOME OF THIS MATERIAL IS OUTDATED, NOTHING HURTS TO JUST CALL THEM OR GO IN AND ASK, IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO ASK IF THEY SELL THEM WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION).
So SWIM recently starting IV heroin use. SWIM was able to get his hands on a single 1cc syringe from a friend that had a long tip, and a slightly larger gage than SWIM wanted syringe, but it was still completely usable. SWIM used this syringe nearly 40 times (most syringes are meant for single use so I highly advise not to do this or you will tear up your veins) before severely noticing the dulling of the tip and just the all around wear on the syringe, so it was time to attempt to purchase some on his own. I had done some research and saw that my state did not require a prescription, but did not have a set in stone policy about it. Most other experiences had varying results, and SWIM pretty much determined that it was up to the pharmacist.
SWIM decided, what the hell, why not call the pharmacy and ask them SWIM'sself. SWIM simply asked "Are you allowed to sell syringes to people without a prescription, SWIM needs them for a project?" The technician told SWIM to hold on and came back with the answer "just go ahead and come in and we can sell them to SWIM". So SWIM thought great, SWIM will try tomorrow. The next day SWIM went to a different pharmacy, but the same chain late in the afternoon. SWIM had done some research and had a story ready to explain what SWIM was needing the syringes for. SWIM approached the single worker and simply said "Hi, SWIM had called earlier in regards to buying some syringes for my project" (SWIM obviously knowing in his head that she would have no idea of this phone call because SWIM called a different pharmacy, but figured she would just assume I called and spoke to someone else). The worker gave a somewhat strange look but then asked what SWIM needed. To be less conspicuous SWIM asked for 20 1cc 29 or 20 gage short tips and 3 5cc and 1 10cc syringes to convince her that no drug user would ever ask for a 5cc and 10cc syringe and that they were genuinely being used for a project. As she walked back to get them, she asked what you were doing with them and SWIM responded by saying SWIM went to a local college and was growing mushrooms in different environments and needed the syringes to transport the mushroom spores. She bought it and went ahead in finding the strangely large syringes that I am sure no one had ever asked to purchase before (10cc syringes come with HUGE needles) and the precious 1cc syringes that SWIM was really after.
All in all SWIM had success in his first attempt in purchasing syringes and it really did come down to the pharmacist's discretion. As SWIM was checking out, with his confidence high, he started asking a little more about their policy on this. The pharmacist said that usually they DON'T sell them and she whispered "because of drug users" (as SWIM silently chuckled). SWIM REALLY wanted to go ahead and preach to her about how it's better to give IV users clean needles then have them re-using dull and dirty needles, but he decided to restrain himself and nod in agreement as if those "drug users" were the scum of society. She mentioned that she only sold them to SWIM because she clearly knew SWIM was using them for a legitimate use and mentioned that she had a painter come in the other day asking for them as well and she sold them to him too (inside I was curious as to whether this "painter" really just enjoyed painting his veins with the love juice instead lol). It seems that if you come up with a relatively good use, and act confident, as well as come in very well dressed, you can be successful in purchasing syringes over the counter without a prescription. SWIM did need to sign the syringe log, which was not a problem. Just don't be a complete idiot about it, where sleeves if you have tracks, and be confident. I highly suggest calling first, so you don't look like some random kid who just strolled in asking for syringes. SWIM also made sure to mention that he had called earlier as to indicate someone already approved his purchase. Also make sure you do not live in one of those extreme states that outright banned the purchase of syringes, which I believe are very few.
Please let me know some of your experiences in purchasing syringes, this was SWIMS story, which I enjoyed.
