Psychosis and terror during opiate WD

How is this possible? Came off only a 0.75g a day H habit, experienced delusional terror, I was terrified of non-existent things. During the night I experienced ridiculously intense psychosis, far worse than that of benzo WD, I thought I was a CIA agent working with my non-existent partner, trying to find a terrorist who stole data that has instructions on how to create a deadly virus and it felt more real than ever. And when afternoon came around, I would come back and remember who I am, but in some sort of delirious state. On 4th day I got hold of some subutex and took the whole 8mg, after about an hour, this madness stopped.

Why is this, I thought this couldn't happen during opiate WD?

Or do I have an underlying psychiatric disorder, like schizophrenia?

My mom has been a D&A counselor for about 30 years. She says opiate withdrawal can absolutely cause delusions, hallucinations, extreme anxiety, etc. If you are having this type of reaction, you may want to go to a detox center during the withdrawal (local drug & alcohol treatment can help you get into one). They may be able to give you something, or at least help with the experience. But unless you had schizophrenia prior to using H, it's unlikely you have it now.

I suffer from mental disorders (OCD, GAD, MDD) and opioid withdrawal ALWAYS exacerbates these tremendously to the point where I feel psychotic. I don't have delusions, hallucinations, or any of that but I definitely don't feel in my right mind and once the insomnia kicks in, hoo boy. Luckily I am scripted Seroquel which is an atypical anti-psychotic so having that helps but sometimes even that wont cut through the insomnia. And if I try to take larger doses than usual to help with sleep, myclonic jerks set in which is basically like restless leg syndrome but all over.

So to answer your question, although not typical, if H is all you were messing with I believe it's very possible the withdrawal caused your psychosis. Glad it seems to have calmed down for you though.

severe stress, from any source can cause people to have psychotic breaks. while its not common it can happen. try not to worry about it now, it happened its over. it doesnt mean it will happen again.
if you have to detox again though you may want to be somewhere supportive, esp now that you may be anxious of this happening again.
