Psychiatry - a pseudoscience that simply shouldn't exist in today's modern world.

I think psychiatry is a science that lacks definable procedure, therefor it is mostly based on expert opinion. It is not a science that is completely off base though, but even mainstream can be influenced by opinion, let alone all the fringe groups.

The same thing could be said for a lot of other specialities in the medical field when we're actually talking about how things are operated in practical terms, i.e. in the consult room.

However, you only have to read any number of psychiatry journal articles to see that there is indeed a definable procedure to their method. Otherwise it's not a science at all, is it :)

What makes psychiatry a valid science, is that it uses scientific method..... insofar as it can be applied to something as intangible & unique as the mind.

What makes psychiatry an imperfect thing, is that it's still science applied and interpreted through the lens of the psychiatrists' experience.
No science is exact or complete..... especially when it comes to psychiatry and psychonautics.

Is there a trend in psychiatry to over-diagnose mental disorders, and over-prescribe medication?..... I think so, but I also don't think it happens with any more frequency than GP croakers writing scripts for opiates..... and we all know the plethora of physical problems opiates are an economical panacea for.
Medicine is a science, but its also a business... snake-oil is still everywhere.

^very good explanation! I would fully agree with this. It drives me crazy that the profit-incentive is introduced at all in the treatment of mental health because very often the two motives will have different ends (treating the individual v. profiting).

It seems often (at least in the US) that too little time is spent on evaluation and too much emphasis is put on pharmacological intervention rather than alternatives that have more sustainable and effective application.

I can't believe someone would be so ignorant as to say that mental disorders like bi-polar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia are not real medical problems. They are debilitating illnesses that have a significant impact on a person's quality of life and can result in suicide. Medication and/or therapy is one of the most successful ways to date in helping people overcome or reduce their suffering.

Also, Psychology/Psychopharmacology/Neurobiology are relatively new fields in medicine/science, and just like many other fields it hasn't been perfected, but that doesn't mean they are useless. I'd put much more faith in people who have put years into scientific research/study/testing than I would in some twat who took a few entry level psych classes without earning even a two year degree, or explaining things with religious beliefs. I'm not saying that mistakes haven't been made or aren't currently being made. I hope in 50 or 100 years the field has progressed and future doctors will look back a more primitive time and psycho science, just as we look at the progress made since 50 years ago in our own time.

Ok bro, I'm ignorant for not believing in psychiatry, but it's still funny to me how I haven't had one episode of depression or any other mental "disease" once I stopped believing in them.

i know that bi-polar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia are real medical problems; so is the persistence of aggressive diagnostics. which id bet there would be very little of if there was 99% less meds out needing cabinets' to fill.

any psychological disorder is going to be caused by a physical reaction, this can be caused by an external situation, food, random allergies, deceptive beliefs that really can be rid of. there are many many contributing factors,,, it isnt simple enough to be blanketed by chemicals always, not at all.

i had to think earlier about how i raised my voice in negativity, but i also raised it in positivity during the same conversation; me raising my voice negatively was disturbing to a friend. instead of going on about it, thinking its their problem or my problem, a problem that i cant seem to control... i can.

i shouldnt need to raise my voice to convey something, in a positive or negative aspect. you know? this leveled several other things along the way, personally. for now thats what i have to work with in a sustainable manner - seems the more i, YOU, whom ever allow themselves the same if needed things would be set to a much smoother course for all involved.

sounds maybe too simple, the same as to just stop believing in them; its not exactly easy but for most would work in a numerous ways.

- but of course there are moments were raising your voice is needed

In a similar vein (no pun intended), do you think people can overcome drug addictions by simply no longer believing in them? Substance dependence is listed in the DSM-IV, after all.

i do.

in many ways - it isnt something i think is exactly smart though-haha
this is much a much safer thing to assume with addiction rather then psychiatric d/o's...

but it works, only, just as much as one believing that they can never stop does.

One isn't the best judge of one's own mental states.

You also contradict yourself; if you don't believe in these diseases at all, then you cannot have ever believed yourself to be depressed, before or after holding this belief that depression does not exist.

It's one thing not to believe in certain doctors, or even most doctors you have met. But it's just simply another to dismiss physics, or geology, or meteorology, just because you don't believe in it. That's just ignoring reality, what most psychiatrists would call denial.

^:-x

the DSM manuals are for symptom clustering.

more of a thesaurus rather then a dictionary, but, this turns into another catch-22.

though i think Bavanai's point is being washed over, it is important, very fucking important; to individual extents - a very touchy subject.

I am happy they don't feel depressed, that's great news for anyone. :)

Depression still exists though. Mental health problems occur all over the world, and make up a large part of the global burden of disease.

hehe : to-and-fro

yes indeed, but, with the existing acknowledgment of both [[while considering the degrees of the depression]] it seems that trying a less invasive temporary learned solution could be better for the person actually 'suffering' from depression - look for an environmental or cognitive cause, then maybe an 'organic' one - and thats as much as i can try and say about it.
