Psychedelics for someone with an unusual brain.

Well, we both have quite unusual brains, but hers (my girlfriend) is perhaps more clearly unusual.

My girlfriend and I, both curious and slightly experienced in psychedelics (I more so) are contemplating doing either mushrooms or 2C-B together this summer.

I have experience with:
MDMA, Salvia, DMT, Iboga, Mushrooms, LSD, MDMA, Nitrous, Kratom, Ayahuasca.

She has experience with:
Salvia, DMT, LSD, Marijuana, 2C-E

We both love Salvia and hate LSD. I hate cannabis, she loves it. She loved 2C-E. I take a spiritual growth-approach to psychedelics, and she takes more of a pleasure-seeking (though it is deep pleasure and joy) attitude toward drugs. She does realize that there is a lot to learn about oneself and other people in altered states.

So why am I asking for advice?

For one, she's a super lightweight- one beer and she's tipsy, and the one time she did a half a tab of acid, she was up for 28 hours, the final 12 hours she was just waiting for it to end. Not only is her body sensitive, her mind is extremely open and sensitive. The things she normally experiences remind me very much of a typical mushroom experience.

She sees it all. She sees energy very clearly, on me and on other people. She sees animals, entities, parts of people. She sees colors, atmospheres. A room may have water running down its walls and have various species of birds flying around the ceiling. She says at one point she could see cells, muscles, bones, all very vividly. Sometimes she says she feels EVERYTHING, like the entire universe flowing through her, or like she is connected to everything, yet feels so small. She has a very active spiritual life to me, but she questions it and worries and thinks that it's just a lot of fabrication, and something is wrong with her brain.

On the other hand, she is literally one of the most competent people I know. She is a brilliant singer and songwriter, she is extremely socially apt, very, VERY intelligent (straight As on EVERYTHING), and to me, extremely lucid and logical, though she does get carried away with emotion with some things.

It's hard to say something is wrong with her, but it does seem that she already sort of lives in a psychedelic mindset. She sees lights I don't see, things often appear to bright for her, she's extremely sensual, and has a keen connection and appreciation for music. She is naturally aware of very important aspects of the universe. Love is her number one priority, and she has spoken wisely on a number of occasions about how to best utilize one's energy.

The instances of her altered perception and spiritual activity are too many for me to count. She is very very special, and i DON'T mean that in a negative way. She has a unique, powerful, beautiful mind that is a constant source of amazing beauty--she once said that every time I kissed her, she saw beautiful gardens grow in my room and on my walls--and also a source of torment--one night she hallucinated that our entire college campus had been reduced to rubble and that there were fires everywhere.

Her experience on 2C-E was a typical and mostly positive one. Acid was uncomfortable and destabilizing, but she handled it (with some of my help).

Why/how is her mind like this?

I've recently learned about her early childhood, and it seems like she was this bright and psychically sensitive and from the get-go, but there were a couple instances that have had an effect on her psyche.

She had a bad concussion as a kid (I forget what age, somewhere in between 7 and 13 yrs), and for a week or so she had almost no short term memory. Thankfully it came back.

Last year (she was 19), she totaled her car, and though she was not injured, she did get some neck whiplash (and she already had a sensitive neck) and it seemed to exacerbate things. Her vision began to falter (it would narrow, and it would be rainbow-like things that blocked her vision), the already vivid imagination/perception was kicked up a big notch, and she got severe headaches that eventually faded after a good 9 months. Occasionally a limb would go numb for a day or so, but that went away also. We were wary of any stroke signs. Today she is functional and very active, happy and in love.

I don't want to put forth an image of her as some kind of fragile person with a weird head. She's strong on all levels, independent, and one of the most genuine people I know.

For me, psychedelics are healing, door-opening injections of wisdom. On the one hand, psychedelic venturing (especially with mushrooms) might give her some insight or healing around this psychic opening about which she has so much fear and doubt. On the other hand, a psychedelic adventure might exacerbate something and it could be the opposite of what we want.

The situation is complex, so if you have any questions I'd be happy to clarify things.

What is your question? I would love to help..

It seems to me like you need guidance or advice to which substance to ingest next time of some kind?

Because she's a unique individual, just like anyone else... People and their minds are not "one size fits all". It sounds like she simply has a very active imagination and a strong drive to appreciate life. You're lucky to hang out with someone as energetic an interesting as her, it seems.

If you are looking for some sort of biological basis behind this, good luck. None of what you've said seems unusual to me, even though others might find her "quirky" or "wierd". The brain is unusual, and you sound like you've simply found someone who knows how to appreciate and use hers. I would be more inclined to appreciate the constant flux of energy from her rather than try to find a drive or a cause behind it.

It's also worthwhile to remember that everyone responds differently to psychedelics. It's totally normal to not like cannabis, but like serotonergics like the 2Cs. Some people dislike acid's long duration, too, while others love it. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I AM lucky to hang out with such a person. You're right, it'd be futile to try to find a biological basis for this. Though I am surprised that none of what I said seems unusual to you. She sees things that no one else sees-- a lot of it, all the time.

Other people don't think she's quirky or weird, they see a completely normal (as well as high-energy) person.

I'm not asking a specific question, I just want to open up a discussion, because I really do think that this is a special case.

how do you know she sees all this stuff? your talking as if you've entered her brain or something. maybe you've gone wrong somewhere

This person is a girlfriend of 1.5 years. We know each other very closely and it's not something she can hide from me at our level of intimacy. She describes what she sees/feels to me when she's comfortable about it, or when it affects her behavior. Other times I just notice that she's looking in a direction with great awe and interest, usually accompanied by speechlessness, and when I ask her about it later, sometimes she tells me, and other times she is too embarrassed to tell me.

A constant stream of endogenous psychedelics (DMT) in dosages big enough to produce "classical" effects is very unlikely due to the eventual receptor desensitization. I have never seen evidence that DMT is produced endogenously in humans above "background" concentrations.

That notwithstanding, my two cents on this issue is that if you are of sound mind and body (and able to distinguish your "hallucinations" from reality) you have what some people call a "vivid imagination". The human mind is a wonderful tool that can use information in many modes, not just through thought, but also visual imagery, musical themes etc. If it doesn't interfere in normal daily life (as long as she's not getting rapturous visions of armageddon at the dinner table) then it's nothing to see a doctor about, unless you enjoy the prospect of mood-dampening antipsychotic drugs.
