Psychedelics as antidepressants.

A Good read, cheers!

Although, I was always under the impression that it was a 'bad idea to take psychadelics during periods of upheavel in life'? Erowid states that it can exagerate the problems?

If someone could clarify this contradiction that would be nice.

^ It's not that it's an inherently bad thing to do, it's more than it's just wildly unpredictable. In the past I've used psychedelics during relatively chaotic periods in my life, and ended up benefiting greatly from that perspective shift at the time, but it also could have gone very wrong very easily. For most people it simply isn't worth the risk, and I would agree for the most part.

OP, thanks for posting this sweet article.

Thats cool.

I do believe that if you are going to use psychedelics to treat deep rooted psychological issues, then it should be done under the right conditions by professionals, which i think is unavailable to the average person, but could be done as government funded research i.e with a licence.

Even if all the right protocols for such research are put into place there is always a chance of things going horribly wrong.

What i find facinating with this research is that through studying the mechanisms of these psychedelics on brian functioning, they will be able to develop drugs that produce the desired effects without the psychedlic aspect, thus avoiding doing more harm than good with having bad trips.

This is groundbreaking research in the field of mental illness.

thank you muchly for sharing. it's good to see this type of research going on. i have OCD and am RX'd Lexapro for it which reduces my symptoms from about a 7/10 to a 2-3/10. i've had multiple experiences with Psilocybin mushrooms and have found that they do have the ability to reduce my OCD to absolute zero. the first time it happened it was nothing short of epiphanic.

ikkyu is spot-on. during times of "upheaval" and such, i would leave such use to those with experience and a thorough understanding of what they're doing, for as ikkyu pointed out, it can be quite beneficial/worthwhile. nonetheless, during such circumstances, as ikkyu put it, things can go "very wrong very easily" and, from my experience, it becomes much-much more difficult to "right the course" of a bad trip under such circumstances (relative to psychedelic use under more optimal conditions).
