Psychedelics and Headaches

Hey, i tried searching but couldnt find what i was looking for.

i notice that almost every time i use a psychedelic that when i come down i get a really weird head ache, not like any other. it feels like its on the top left and right side of my head, closer to the back then the front. i seem to notice it most with tryptamines, but phens have done it to me too. most notably mushrooms and 4 aco met have had this effect on me. The longer i am high on the psychedelic, the longer the headache will last. (a regular trip with no re dose usually causes a headache for 3-4 days. Im pretty sure it could only be caused by the drugs as i stay hydrated.

So my question is this, does anyone know the reason i get these headaches? has anyone else here had a similar experience?

thanks in advance

do you ever get headaches normally? or while on the psychedelic, or only after? Are you male or female?

I've noticed that a lot of women (+50% in my experience) tend to get headaches after 2c-x's. Haven't noticed it as much with tryptamines. This happens to some men too, but not nearly as frequently, again, in my experience. I'm unsure as to why, but i'd speculate it could be some sort of rebound effect from the vasoconstriction typical to 5ht agonists, of course this is all speculation based on observation.

The last time I did 4-Aco-MET, I had a minor headache the next day, but I also had a few beers and smoked some relatively low grade pot, both of which can also cause headaches, so I'm not sure what caused it.

if these are migraines and not just stress-headaches, then...

non-hallucinatory tryptamines are medicines used to abort migraines, an example would be sumatriptan (imitrex), they work by vasoconstriction

sometimes people experience a "rebound headache" or migraine when the drug wears off, i dont think this rebound headache has any good known solution

thats what I got for the tryptamines, the phens i dont know why

btw, ergots/lsa/lsd are also used as migraine medication(ergotamine tartrate)... so maybe you could eat 1 or 2 HBWR and see if that takes care of it

not usually i dont get headaches no, just the day after psychedelics. im a guy.

hmm that sounds like a good idea on the hbwr
thanks guys

the triptan class drugs are 4-sub-trypts, just like psilocin, 4-Aco-MET etc, and have somewhat similar vasoconstrictive effects (see clusterbusters). These triptans, as many people with migraines will tell you, can cause rebound headaches when the drug wears off. I would be willing to bet you're experiencing a similar rebound headache type situation.

As for phens, they probably still have a high enough affinity for the receptor (5ht 1 or 2b, IIRC) that causes the vasoconstriction to still be able to cause this rebound effect in people predisposed to have it.

i get a headache on the comedown and maybe the next day from 2ce especially, but LSD too a little

maybe it's serotonin drain?

I was under the impression that headaches were a common side effect of mushrooms. From the (negative) effects in erowid's psilocybin mushrooms vault: "headache, usually as effects wear off, sometimes beginning the next day, lasting for up to 24 hours".

I personally find that this happens especially if I take mushrooms after a long period of sobriety. Also, it's definitely more pronounced with higher doses. I always figured it had to do with the mental effects of dealing with that much energy. It's a lot of work to have your mind flipped like that, especially after a while of being rooted in the sober world of straight lines.

Somewhat related note, I heard that the reason your legs hurt after eating cubensis is because of a higher concentration of toxins in them as opposed to other species. I always hurt after. I know psiloc(yb)in isn't very bad but the other stuff in t
he fungi. Can someone confirm?

Edit-I also get headaches after mushrooms and Ayahuasca. Someones after pot, although it is quality stuff. And I forget who said it, but the movement factor definAtley plays into the intensity if it. Perhaps it has to do with dehydration? I get headaches if I don't eat or have enough water in me. Not being one that sweats much if all mAkes me question that though.

highly dubious, serotonergic psych's like LSD & 2c-e don't effect serotonin levels like empathogens such as MDMA. Classical psyches just bind to 5ht receptors, among a smattering of various other receptors.

I get something similar after mushrooms and oral dmt, been meaning to post about it actually. It's a very particular sort of headache, not sure how to describe it but often I don't feel it as long as I sit completely still, and then when I suddenly move my head it starts hurting. Next day it's always gone though.

I get them every time with mushrooms/oral dmt except for very low doses.
Never with smoked dmt.
Never with lsd (maybe a tiny bit after a high dose, nothing like the others though) .
I've only had 2cb once but didn't get them that time either.

I'd love to figure out a way to prevent them too?

I'm male and not usually prone to headaches of any sort btw.

not sure if headaches are a common side effect in general for any drug (not just psychedelics). like i get headaches when i take too much ketamine and go into the k-hole. On the comedown, more often than not my head will be spinning and i get really bad headaches.

On shrooms, if lets say i was to trip 2-3 times for 2-3 days straight, the first day normally i would get a headache, but the 2nd or 3rd trip in succession i have less chance of getting a headache.

I guess it all really boils down to the individual.
