hi guys, I am looking for a good journal article in regards to psychedelic use and outcomes on depression.

I would be most interested in a link between psilocybin and depression
or psilocybin and cancer

I am open to any good journal articles because I have to present them for a class (so any good journals you've read and like)

I can give u a personal experience with taking shrooms while being a little depressed. I used to take shrooms a lot I've tripped at least 60 to 80 times and my last trip I ever had will be my last trip. I can say that shrooms and depression do not mix. If u want the story pm me. Ill forget to check back here so pm me and ill let ya kno if u want to hear. It was by far the worst 6 hour experience of my entire life that landed me in hospital parking lot before I collected myself and realized I was only tripping. It was horrrrribbbllleee

You can hear a lot of anecdotal report here, in PD, but if you want journal articles, then ADD is the best place to ask. :)

Well, while this thread is in PD, I can share my experience. Psychedelics seem to boost my mood and help with light depression(though I never was diagnosed, so it may be something different). Now, I use them weekly and feel no sign of depresion.
Of course, everyone is different, and you'll hear opposite reports.

And, welcome to Bluelight! Also, do you have any experiences with psychedelics? :)

Psychedelics while depressed is DEFINITELY not the way to go...I remember crying on 2C-B once cause of what someone said to me. Totally fucked my trip.

It helped me. By taking me out of my usual state of mind, I was able to think differently as it forced me out of my usual thoughts and then when returning to baseline, it wasn't the same as being depressed. Pretty sure it doesn't work that way for everyone, but it does help me. It also makes me become strange or for lack of a better word non conventional.

Taking psychedelics when being depressed can easily result in a bad trip. Casually it might also enable the user to escape the depression for a while. I think there are quite a few users who use psychedelics as a form of escapism. The psychedelic experience could also inspire the user to better deal with their depression, because they see their life / what depresses them from a different point of view etc.

"Depression + psychedelics = bad" is probably an useful answer to prevent "I just wanna get all fucked up" style users from doing something stupid, but you can't really generalize it like that. It depends on the mindset, the setting, the intentions etc.

Indeed. If your goal is too "get mad high and see pretty colors" you shouldn't trip while depressed. If you want to work out your own internal issues by being able to look at your problems from a different point of view it is something you should consider.

I can assure you psychedelics have saved many lives.

Thanks guys, I didnt meant tripping while you are depressed, I know thats a bad idea. lol, i meant small doses used to Treat depression. I'll have to check out ADD

I remember hearing awhile ago that small doses of psilo being used in cancer patients for treatment and I found this interesting.

allium, i have used psychedelics before acid once and mushrooms I don't know how much because I used to cultivate but that was years ago and I think maybe less than 10 times total because I believe in moderation overall.

^What is the difference between doctors giving people mushrooms to help solve issues causing depression, and someone taking mushrooms on their own with the same goal? I don't see a difference, as in both cases mushrooms are used exactly the same way... to induce deep thought and hopefully internal resolution.

What's the difference between someone walking in a city, and someone guided through the same city?
Assume, that in both cases you follow exactly the same path. ;)

Sure, walking alone can be more fun, but walking with a professional guide can be a lot more informative!

^Yeah, I would probably use a guide if traveling somewhere new. With psychedelics though, there is no one that truly knows what you will see. I don't see anything that a doctor could say that hasn't been discussed somewhere like BL!

I understand your point, but I think a medicine is a medicine... Doctors don't change the action of the drug... they can only give instructions on how to use and what to expect.

^ If they just give you a drug without any sort of psychotherapy, then I agree, it is the same.

But psychedelics can a be powerful tool in hands of experienced and professional psychotherapist!

Well if you are going to try to use them to solve your issues, I think at least having a knowledgeable trip sitter that you trust would be extremely helpful in making you as comfortable as possible and is the next best thing to actually having the drug given to you by a medical professional.

Well since I dont give a fuck and didn't read a word of this thread other than the titles I am going to post some personal experience because I am bored and you suck cocks;

I was depressed for a while. I took some acid. I realized that it was my own negative thoughtswordsactions which were making me depressed. Now I dont thinkdosay those things which were making me depressed. Now I'm not depressed. Your in control man, look up "emotional intelligence" it is a skill which should be honed by all. Seriously good skill to have, a high EI.

Taker easy duder.

My first acid trip changed my life, one night eliminated years of depression from me. Life changing moment, like finally seeing the light after fumbling around in the dark for ages.

DMT helped me in a similiar way, it was a lot more powerful though. That one was like being wrapped in the warm embrace of god and the feeling that things in my life will work out, one way or another its all just a ride. Sometimes its loud and scary and you have to sit back and inventory the whole of who and what you are and figure out what you want to change in order to be happier with your life.

My advice though, think about setting some goals for yourself, actually write them down and put them somewhere you can see them regularly. Start trying to get in shape and eat better. Try to sleep more reasonably. Being able to focus on doing something you enjoy goes a long way... Ask yourself why are you unhappy? And then ask yourself what is within the scope of your power to do that will better your circumstances and life?

There were some studies of repeated high doses of lsd curing schizophrenia and other mental illness a while ago.

its a bunch of basically human experiments with these sorts of drugs. And the results in some of them are spectacular. Going from a psychotic level of autism, never using real words or dialog, catatonic states, biting, and i think you get the idea that any improvement in someone that far away that results in productive things. The entire thing is worth a read, there are like 9 other children they gave acid to.

Stevie

This nine year old, very small boy had a total of thirteen sessions over a ten month period. Prior to treatment Stevie was extremely withdrawn and isolated and responded to no one. He vacillated between extreme catatonia and excited catatonic rage reactions. He would become assaultive and destructive and especially physically aggressive towards younger and more helpless children. During these times he had to be placed in camisole (full straight-jacket) and seclusion. He never spoke to anyone, made no eye contact and lived exclusively in his own world. What was unique about this boy's psychedelic experiences was his ability to enjoy sensory experiences that are commonly experienced by the normal person. During the first two hours he would delight in the visual and auditory experiences and constantly comment about what he was experiencing.

We soon discovered Stevie had an extensive vocabulary which he never used in his usual state. He would say such things as "the music is following the designs," he would laugh and say, "I love you, designs. Heart designs, ahhh, what a beautiful lady, a whole house full of changes." He rhythmically moved his body very gracefully to the music. He became extremely animated, smiling, sometimes giggling and appearing very much enchanted by his experiences. The long duration of this type of reaction was most unusual with these children. He would also become extremely quiet and peaceful, radiating a serene countenance that is witnessed when individuals are experiencing transcendental states. After the first few sessions he became very excited when told that he was going to have another session. He would run down to the treatment room and participate in preparing it by setting out the things that we would typically bring - fruit, cookies, flowers, pictures, record albums and so forth. When the room was set up he would take a wash cloth, dampen it with cool water, fold it and lay down on the couch and cover his eyes with it, a ritual we would frequently use in attempting to get patients to travel inwardly. He would then want the music started. He was acting like a typical normal person in preparing themselves for a session.

In the second phase he would exhibit intense turmoil, conflict, fear and agitation. He indulged in the entire gamut of behaviors and emotions, biting, spitting, profuse and prolonged swearing and extreme hyperactivity, destructiveness and total catatonic withdrawal. He would carry on extended dialogues between two or possibly more people, evidencing conflict between his mother, father and himself. There was a great deal of anal and genital content to his conversation, with endless repetitions about "shit, piss, penis, nasty, black BM, death, black hearts, throw up, black breasts, black diarrhea, chew it, afraid, burn it hurts." He would interrupt these dialogues by going to the bathroom, standing in front of the toilet, turning in a few circles and then urinating and when he ran out of urine he would continue this behavior twenty to twenty-five times. After an exhausting three to four hours he would appear very beaten up and would allow staff to sit with him, touch him and hold him, feed him and nurture him.

Touching moments would often occur with these small patients, near the end of one session a male sitter was sitting beside Stevie, holding his hand and Stevie opened his eyes and said, "Will you talk to me, David?," David said, "Yes Stevie" and after a moment said, "I don't know what to say?" to which Stevie replied, "Just talk to me with your eyes." This coming from a child who in his usual state was either catatonic or wildly destructive. Very often we had no idea how to interact with the children when they were obviously back in time wrestling with the demons of their pasts. They would be unaware of our presence and often the most we could do was to sit it out with them. Remarkable changes occurred with this boy. He started to relate to treatment staff and wanted to be touched and held. His manic and destructive behavior disappeared and he started relating to boys of his own age and older ones and struck up a bond with another boy on the program. They became good buddies. He became well enough to attend school and was able to function well in that setting. His parents were amazed at the changes and started to visit him and then began taking him home every weekend. He was very verbal, became very playful with the treatment staff and was behaving like a normal boy.
