I think it is these points, plus the availability of resources such as Pihkal/Tihkal, Erowid etc where it is very easy to gain an interest in exploring the subtle differences made by small changes to a molecule

This. When I was 15 or 16 back in high school I would spend hours reading over the vaults of erowid, learning about all these exciting chemicals. What they are, what they do, what kind of character they have, what kinds of situations they're good for. I kind of developed a wide-ranged mental list of those that I would like to try, and those I wouldn't. I knew I would be able to find things like DMT and Mescaline from natural sources, but stuff like 2C-B... I honestly thought I'd never see it in person... until I did. You can't pass shit like that up.

The psychology behind it is interesting. It is like HST said, once you get into a serious drug collection it's hard to stop. I've often wondered why that is. I think the acquisition is half the fun. There's also at least a small element of elitism. It's pretty satisfying hearing "You have what?". There's an element of stockpiling too. I don't know how long I'll have access to these things, so better grab a sizable amount of them now.

I could easily spend a good couple of thousand pounds on building up a nice collection of only the Phenethylamines (getting at most a gram of each), such is the great number of compounds in this class I want to try. This doesn't include custom synths/esoterics, but ones more easily available.

I haven't even thought about the Tryptamines yet, though I could imagine this may well run to another thousand.

I have but one word for you: Mescaline.

Anyway, I don't like the idea of collecting psychedelics because many of them degrade as they age. They ain't no wine, I prefer mine always as fresh as possible.
 
I've just recently started my collection so it's not too big yet but the reason I started is simply to have this stuff available on hand, as opposed to having to acquire it when I want it. I also like the feeling of opening up my box and looking through the list, assessing each one as I go.

I feel like a mechanic who needs to undo a bolt, so I open up the box and search for just the right size tool. As I look past each one, I consider tools for the job I wouldn't have thought of straight away, things that might make the job harder but more fulfilling, things that would make the job longer but allow me to undo two bolts at a time. Get the idea?

Psychedelics tend to be more of a special occasion for me than I wish they were, do you think that's why collecting seems more common? Because people aren't going through whole grams of 2Cs and multi mg dosages of LSD at a time?

Do you have a psychedelic collection? (NOT asking for any specifics, if yes let's just assume its all legal) If so, how long have you had it and what made you want to start it rather than just buying an amout for one or two uses.

I can anticipate most of the answers to my immediate questions, so instead of taking them at face value and just answering with a few words, try to think outside the box with your answers.

I don't think Fear & Loathing has much to do with it in most cases. I've never really been a huge fan of the movie but I have been a fan of variety and having many choices on hand.

What qualifies it as a collection rather than simply a "stash" is the fact that there are many different substances in there. And the reason for a range of different psychedelics is, as pointed out earlier, that they offer different effect profiles. Some being more recreational & some being more profound and introspective, some being short-acting & some that span 12-20 hours, some to be taken in a group or with a significant other & some that lend themselves to solo journeys.
I began collecting substances that I found more worthwhile than others, ones that I wanted to make sure I had around in case supply were to be restricted in one way or another. There are certain compounds which I would almost certainly want a lifetime supply of, so they warrant stockpiling IMO. Of course there is also the contributing factor of it being far more economical to buy more than just a few servings.
That's just my take on the whole thang, though.:)
 
not a huge huge fan of fear and laothing but i watch it every once and a while. i do enjoy collecting psyches/mdma, having a variety on hand so i can have things ahead of time and i can have a selection on what kind of experience im wanting at that point and time. makes things way more convienent and it makes me proud of myself when i save something for a while and have a nice experience on what i save, its very rewarding imo. i also grab more than a few doses at once its cheap and easier for me that way, i have a extreme amount of will power so i can easily not eat up my goodies or give any to my buddys.

i also use the amber vials and bottles+ selica gel packets they work like a charm for me, none of my goods have went bad or degraded ime.
