So the doc just gave me a scrip of this stuff. Told me its an ssri an that in 2 weeks ill have a mood lift. Thats all she told me.

Other thing i know about this drug is that i should wait 2 weeks an get off it before taking any mdma.

Thats it. So any input an personal experiences would be appreciated. Will it make me feel like a zombie? Or does it do what its supposed to an make ya feel good in a few weeks. I dont mean high as in good. Just mood lift good.

Have you ever had a period of insomnia, characterised by a massive increase in ego and self confidence, in which you consumed many more drugs than you would on an average, potentially with psychotic elements?

Everybody reacts differently. I had a very negative reaction to fluoxetine and feel now like the entire class of drugs is a scam. I was told they were soooo much safer than the benzodiazepines I was taking, and more effective. I only took it because my depression was so bad at that time. But no one ever said anything about how for some people, it can be just as hard if not harder to get off of than benzodiazepines.

This all was made extra clear to me during the horrendous withdrawal symptoms I experienced when I tried to get off of it. Horrible brain-zaps, insomnia, anxiety, depression, it was probably on-par with Benzodiazepine withdrawals, which are pretty much agreed upon by everyone as having the most detrimental / worst withdrawals of any drug class.

I have used Prozac a long time ago at a very small dosage ...around 10mgs a day. I took it for ....mmm id say 4~5 months. It did help me cope with depression and I had no side effects. However when it was time to discontinue I had very bad *withdrawals* if you can call it that. I had what is known as brain zaps. Every time I would move my eyes to shift my vision, it felt as if someone gave my entire spine and brain a shot of electricity. It was not pleasant. This lasted around 1 month. Now this was when I was 18, I am around 30 now and I still get a brain zap here and there. If I was to do it again, I would NEVER touch another SSRI, SSRE, tricyclic...any of those substances....but that's just me. Now to answer your question a little further, while on prozac, my tolerance to ...pretty much everything dropped. I wasn't a drinker yet, but if I did have an occasional beer or so, it would double it's effects. Prozac also gave me insomnia, and I was unable to ejaculate. Prozac also killed my appetite. That's pretty much it.

Yall are talkin about withdraws thats just fucked up. The doc didnt mention anything about that. Shes an addiction doc also. Youd think they would say that stuff.

No never had a period of insomnia. Nothin w/ the ego boost or self confidence even though i am confident in myself. I do consume alot of drugs but if yer talkin about a lil depression period than no i never had that. Im not depressed. The doc didnt give it to me for depression. She just gave it to me as a mood lifter. Where are ya goin with this man?

I was going with my own experience, I have BP, and thus when I took Prozac I had one of my worst manic episodes, then proceeded into a severe mixed episode. Far worse than the depression it was intended to treat. I just wanted to make sure you weren't going to suffer like I did.

Oh damn man cant believe that shit fucked with ya like that. Hope yer better now. But thanks for the heads up an all.

I'm entirely un-medicated so I have my good and bad days, thankfully not as bad as they were on SSRI's.
Thank you for caring, and take watch of your own emotional reaction.

I wanted to add to this, that in my opinion the two worst withdrawal wise SSRIs are Effexor and Paxil, followed by the rest.

Ive taken prozac in the past and it really did nothing for me at all, but ive been several meds for bi-polar and depression. I now take 40mg of Paxil and 15mg of Abilify daily and I feel good. Cautionary note though, it took about 10 years and many drug combo's for me and 3 different Doctors to finally find what works for me.

I would think though, that if youre waiting for some wonderfully amazing day that your mood is lifted skyward and beyond, then....nope. Not gonna happen :)

prozac was an awful drug experience for me i got thrown into fits of rage and tried to strangle to death my roommate in a psych ward after being on it for 10 days luckily he didn't press charges

For me, I'm on prozac 40 mg and I honestly don't know how well its worked. I began taking it when I was severely depressed, and switched between that, paxil, and zoloft, and eventually went back to prozac. My depression has gotten better, but it is hard to tell whether the prozac actually helped, or my life just changed a lot, because it did. I did not notice a mood change, but my family members said they did. It was not until my doc added Wellbutrin XL 300mg that I noticed a significant change. So my opinion on SSRI's is they are worth a try, but I wouldn't expect to feel a major change. Two weeks is the earliest you will feel the effect, I'd give it a solid 4-6 weeks to determine whether or not to keep using it.
Best of luck!

The point is to not get off of them. ;)

Am I one of the few with positive experience with SSRIs? I'm currently on citalopram, and I think it's a good and cheap medication to keep your mindset stable.

I'm experiencing none of the side-effects. Citalopram is probably the most tolerated SSRI, when it comes to it's side effect profile and the occurance of them.

I would give the Prozac (fluoxetine) a go - it might help - and it might not.

I have taken Prozac before and it has lifted me out of depression a few times and back into the party scene. It can take a lot longer than 2 weeks for it to work.

I have taken Prozac and ecstasy together many times and I have stopped taking Prozac abruptly without any problems.

Everyone reacts differently though, so maybe try a small dose to test the water.

Well my expierence with Prozac was a strange one. It did increase my mood so to say but left me feeling robotic or a "zombie" but I was a happy zombie or at least a mood lifted zombie. It did cause some insomnia the first few weeks as IME every time you take it there is a stimulating feeling, not like your on adderall or meth or coke but your more awake and IME eat less. Like I would barely eat just because I wasn't hungry. Would forget to eat some days.

Well my expierence with Prozac ended in a harsh manner as my dosage was increased and about a week or two later (plus accidentally doubling a dose because I forgot if I took it or not and thought it would be "safer" to take the dose rather then not take it) I went into a hypomanic state and went around my block at 2 in the mourning slashing tires. Cut my hand pretty deep and got stitches and had a hallucinatory "scene" on it which is hard to explain but just imagine doing a task like taking out the trash and everything is so real. It feels exactly like reality, just to find the next day or later on that day that it never happened and in a since you imagined it all. Like if your imagination literally bleeds in with reality.

Just my expierence with Prozac. Did help with GAD and a bit with SAD and helped get rid of weed related anxiety.

I tried to use it recreationally years ago, without having researched it first. Did not take it for two weeks (if you don't, it has pretty much zero effect). Took dozens of capsules daily, foolishly trying to ease the cocaine comedowns (the fluoxetine did pretty much nothing either way). Even injected the contents of 14 capsules, to see what it would do. The answer was, well, nothing.

Taken medically, waiting the initial two weeks for it to buld up in your blood, it is effective as an antidepressant for some of my friends--three of my f(drug user) friends are on fluoxetine, and their daily dose makes them feel relaxed, carefree and content (self-reported), slightly loopy, somehow "watered down" (in terms of personality/assertiveness/aggressivieness (observed by myself)--for several hours, people I know on it don't normally redose during the day, only when they wake up and before they go to bed, from what I''ve heard.

Then I know other friends who have been through the psychiatric health system, been prescribed various antidepressants over time (fluoxetine usually being the first option here), and have found fluoxetine to have absolutely no effect on them or their mood whatsoever. These people went on to try other antidepressants, some finding an answer in sertraline, some mirtazapine, some St. John's Wort. Bodies are different and react to things differently, after all.

Also, I hear from people on it that it potentiates the effects/"reduces tolerance to" (I assume they mean 'increases effects via potentiation, but I'm quoting here) alcohol. So if you are going to be taking fluoxetine, consider yourself an utter lightweight for booze/avoid it if possible.
