Prescription sleep aid

I'm going to ask my doctor for a per for a sleep aid. I'm in canada, what do you think I will be given and as a first time user how should I move ahead if I want to combine with alcohol?

It's hard to say what a doctor will do, I've had doctors give me antihistamines and amitriptyline before prescribing hypnotic sleep aids. I would be careful using alcohol with any cns depressant considering the risks of drug interaction causing further cns depression.

He probably won't give you any scheduled substances to start off with. I'd say wait and see what he gives you, then search around to see if it is relatively safe to combine with alcohol. good luck!

So you think he will just tell me get an over the counter like sleepeze or NyQuil?

Good to know maybe ill just stick to 100mg of sleepeze. Seems like that's what I'm going to get from the doc anyways. Any suggestions on over the counter to keep a steady down feeling. Combos and mixing different OTC

I'd say look into good sleep hygiene first -> having a regular routine, avoid caffeine after noon, only use your bed for sleep and sex, don't drink close to bed time, breathing/focus techniques, etc. There are some good reads on it if you google around.

For otc meds, I have had some success with melatonin and valerian root (independently). I'm trying valerian root + hops tonight. Some people seem to have success with Kava and Taurine. Just be sure to do your homework for anything recommended by anyone including your Dr.

Good luck!

Depends on the doctor. They'll probably suggest ambien (zolpidem), but if you ask them for a different sleep aid and explain your reasoning (well, I'd leave out the part about mixing it with alcohol) but don't take it regularly, its fairly addictive. If Kava is legal in Canada, I'd go with that instead. Its not addictive. If you need something to KO you occasionally, then I'd go for trazodone or mirtazapine. Trazodone is better because it has good next day mood enhancing effects that mirtazapine lacks.

Thanks so if I tell the doc I won't require it often that would increase chances of a stronger script ?
