The people of Switzerland have voted to approve a controversial programme that provides prescription heroin to drug addicts, who then inject it under the careful supervision of medical staff. The programme was first launched 14 years ago.
While 68% of voters approve of the controlled heroin programme, 63% of them opposed the decriminalisation of marijuana. A series of referendums are being held in Siwtzerland currently to help decide the country's drug policy.
The approval of the heroin programme means Switzerland becomes the first country to include the sanctioning of heroin use in government policy.
