I know purpose it serves, but i'm curious as to what it actually is? What really gets me is that the majority of clinics in socal have a selection of really nice buds that are just raped with powder mildew.

Most of the time i catch it but sometimes i get home and break open a nug and see what looks like a cloud of dust.

Wiki page on mildew.
I don't know what purpose it serves, care to explain?

2x - I have never even heard of this before and would love to expand my knowledge of the subject.

I'll see if i I can dig up some information. Can you give us the context in which you would want to use this in? I assume growing of some sort? If that's correct, we can move this to the MEGA grow thread for you, those guys are cultivation geniuses.

From my research ( I assumed it had to do with cultivation), I am not sure why on earth you would WANT powerdered mildew.

It sounds as if your plants have been attacked by powdery mildew. This is a mildew closely related to fungus. The powder is the mildew's reproductive spores. It thrives in an acid environment in a temperature range of 60-70?F (15-21?C) with a humidity above 50%. The spores are floating in the air and there is no practical way to screen them out. Instead, try to change the environment so that conditions don't match the mildew's needs. This may require raising the temperature or lowering humidity.

There are also several safe and effective ways of controlling powdery mildew using minerals or organisms.

Most of the mildicides listed here are fairly new and they are all much less harmful than the old chemical formulations. You won't find most of them at your local store or garden shop, but they are available on the Internet. Many companies sell them there. All of these mildicides are used on edibles or herbs. Some are naturally occurring organisms and are exempt from registration. Others are registered for use on vegetable crops and are considered in the "caution" category, the category for the least dangerous registered mildicides.

AQ10: AQ10 uses a totally new method of fighting powdery mildew, a biofungicide. The active ingredient, Ampelomyces quisqualis, is a fungus that parasitizes the powdery mildew organism. It offers control over a long period of time.

So as far as purpose it serves? Well, it destroys your bud. Think of it as an infection. If you want information on how to avoid this type of mildew, post in the MEGA grow thread. You will get comprehensive and helpful answers there.

OP are you sure you arent just getting confused about a cloud of powdery trichomes coming off when you break open a dryyyyy sticky bud?

It's a fungus that grows on weed. It looks like the leaves have been dusted with powder, hence the name. I doubt the powder you're talking about is due to powdery mildew.

This, I know what mildew is, it's something thrown onto the buds while they're curing, it adds weight and makes its look like its covered in tichs (i wanted to leave this bit out) and lets not be naive about clinics people hahahah many of them are run by people in my age group (20-25).

MoneyMoneyMoney.

Wrong^. PM is not added to buds as they cure for extra weight, its a type of fungus that can attack the plant all throughout the veg cycle and into bloom. Its some shitty stuff to have and it can be a battle to get rid of.

true there are plenty of med dispensarys that sell nuggets with this shitty powdery mildew in them. To they untrained eye it may look like trichs so they get away with it sometimes. Bottom line is PM sucks for growers and smokers!!

powder mildew huh!! hahah well I have the answer as I am a mycologist of sorts ...... well first off I have experienced it on some out door grows and it sucks...its a cleistothecial ascomycete and its impossible to get ride of...you have to remove the infected area or bud because it will spread and take your whole plant very quickly..as for powdery mildew on buds that are dried, cured and being sold at a dispense I highly doubt what you saw is powdery mildew as it would have destroyed the bud long before it was even ready to be harvested.. also the cleistothecia (spore like things) are black like little black specs, the powdery part of the name comes from the whitish tinge to the leaves that looks like a very thin layer of powder but really it is the mycelial network which is outside the cells...and is not actually powdery.... white inside buds is most likely bud rot / grey mold which can happen when the buds are juicy and plump ready to be harvested, took a little to long to dry, or were very big and dense the mold loves that and waiting one more day can be the difference...sometimes its hard to check every bud especially deep inside....

lol apparently you do not know what it is, and i question your understanding of mildew in any form. mildew is a kind of mold, or fungus. powdery mildew refers to the specific kind of fungi that grows on plants. it is not "sprinkled" on to add weight, it attacks and grows on the plant. also, it takes away from the quality of the buds as well being potentially deadly to the respiratory system. most clinics have many growers coming into their shop attempting to sell large quantities of marijuana on a daily basis. this being said, some clinics go as far as testing not only the dried buds but also the rooms which said buds were grown in for things like powdery mildew. either you go to some questionable clinics or you are mistaking trichromes for mildew.

Im sure you know your molds, but its sad how many times ive seen spots of PM in otherwise nice nuggets in dispensarys. I've had it attack my crops before too, it def does not destroy the whole bud before harvest, unless you had a terrible case of it. Fact is there is tons of buds with PM on the market.

there are many...many types of mildew...downey mildew is the most common...phenospora humilli is without doubt the most wide spread of all. also the DEA has unleashed a oxospora fusarium that will destroy cannabis and soil..yup gotta toss the soil too. this new fusarium causes cancer in humans aswell..thanks monsanto..u guys know how to end the party.:p

that fusarium isn't new, unless its a cannabis specialis

Fusarium wilt is a common vascular wilt fungal disease, exhibiting symptoms similar to Verticillium wilt. The pathogen that causes Fusarium wilt is Fusarium oxysporum (F. oxysporum).[1] The species is further divided into forma specialis based on host plant.

I've heard of them doing something along the lines of that (maybe not that particular one). They are fucking cunts. Here we are protecting all sorts of wildlife and the DEA on their fucking high horse have decided that because some people enjoy using this plant, they have a right to try and eradicate cannabis from it's habitat and harm users in the process.

Thankfully we have our own secret weapons to prevent their meddling, such as microbial sprays of our own.

Somehow I think it would be more difficult for the UK state to get away with crap like that.

This thread has deviated pretty far from the original point, which wasn't all that clear to begin with. Closed. PM me if you want it opened again.
