I am not sure if this question is allowed, or where I should put it.

I have chronic back pain. I would like to try medical marijuana as an alternative to my pain pills when I am having only a mild to moderate pain day. I have seen people post about pot making them anxious, so I know that I need to be careful about what strain I try, since I already have anxiety issues. Can anyone give me advice about which strains work best for pain, without causing anxiety? If this question is not allowed, feel free to close this thread. Thank you!

What you need is a High CBD strain.

THC = painkilling, euphoric but also can trigger anxiety
CBD = Anti inflammatory, anti psychotic, anti anxiety, what you want in your strain.

High cbd strains include:

Cannatonic
Harlequin
CBD x haze

Strains like Lemon haze will have only around 0.030% CBD (barely any) and whilst easing your pain may set off unwanted anxiety.
I'd second the White Rhino, however its a very potent strain, its got around 1% CBD i think, however the CBD content will vary and depend on the weeds origin.

hope this helps you somewhat.
(im on the lookout for a high CBD strain in UK myself, im unable to grow )

something worth considering is that I've found alcohol will counteract the pain relieving effect of cannabis. I used to think that cannabis really wasn't worth anything for pain relief until I stopped drinking alcohol. Now it helps with my moderate chronic back pain. It's still not much help for the severe episodes that I get occasionally, but nothing really helps that anyway.

For pain and limited anxiety try GDP (grand daddy purple). It is a great ratio with both high thc and cbd. Bubba kush works well with my back pain. I made a list in the cannabis growing thread for another member with similar concerns to you. Check it out.

If you want something that is great for pain with no anxiety try Harliquin, Nordle, Critical mass etc. The list is very long of potential strains. These three I mentioned are low thc (generally less than 10%... 3-8% usually) and High CBD. This ratio will take care of the pain and not create to much of a "high" that will make you anxious.
I will compare these to my first recommendation GDP so you get an idea of what I am talking about. GDP I have grown and it tested at extreme thc levels. Mid to upper 20's% at times.
This has great pain relief and while i worked in medical collectives it was a common strain for pain patients new to using cannabis. It seemed to be the favorite for new and old pain patients at the time. Very flavorful, with a warm uplifting stone. The other three strains (there are many more in this category) will be a 1:1 ration of THC/CBD. An average grow with these strains will be 5% thc/ 5% CBD. This will cause little to none of the stone GDP or normal cannabis strains will cause. It is great for young and old medical users that need relief and have no tolerance to cannabis. As most medical strains are VERY potent (thc wise) untolerant patients will generally get very anxious. But, for cancer patients who usually need the relief firstly then the stone second 1:1 strains are my recommendation. If you grow high cbd low thc strains you can then make more potent medication by making a concentrated solution. Whether it is capsules, hash/oil's, lotions, transdermal patches, hard candies, chocolate, pastries etc the possibilites are endless. These concentrated forms tend to really attack the pain and work wonders for people who have never been able to find relief from other medications especially opioids. If you live in the US and in a medical state with collectives these products should be easily accessible to you.
Good luck

Cannabis does virtually nothing to ease my back pain, in fact it can increase muscle tenseness, making it worse (or well, it would make it worse if not for the distracting high).

Still you should try, always better with weed than pills. High CBD strain recommended.

Studies about medicinal marijuana seem to have come a long way in the past few years. These studies suggest that marijuana can help treat cataracts, the progression of Alzheimers/dementia, Parkinsons, Rheumatoid arthritis, just to name a few. I don't know if the buzz effect of marijuana is important to you, but you may be interested to know that certain strands of marijuana have been developed that don't give you the high (or paranoia), but still retain many of the medicinal qualities. Some of these are even available in pill form. You may want to look in to these options if you would rather do without the paranoia or the high from marijuana but still want to try treating your condition with marijuana.

Thanks so much the the advice. I am a total noob when it comes to medical magajuana. I was offered an edible yesterday, and thought that sounded much more appealing than attempting to smoke and end up coughing. Well long story short, I thought I was eating a very small amount, but it was way too much for me. I felt horrible. I can definitely relate to those people posting in the bad trip thread. I have always thought of pot as being risk free, no need to know what you are doing. Wrong! I came very close to passing out when I got up to go to the bathroom. Luckily as soon as my head started spinning I laid down. Bottom line... Thanks for the info. I feel stupid for not using it and being more careful. Maybe I am just one of those people that does not like pot. I tried it many years ago in college, and didn't much like it then. Maybe, once I have recovered from this disaster, I will try the pills that give no "high". :)

I have severe anxiety, ADHD, mild depression caused by stress, chronic back pain caused by 2 slipped disks, and a sleep disorder. and i smoke weed instead of taking a shit ton of pills and it works for me. i mean every plant is different, and it all depends on that strand of weed you buy but i feel as though if i can smoke some weed - than taking a handful of pills every day im goin to do it!!!!! good luckon making your decision!
