wassup all...
Since becoming an everyday pot smoker, I have really started to feel the effects of pot on my sleep cycles... If I smoke alot right before bed, I often won't dream at all at night and will wake up not really feeling rested. If I lay off pot for a couple days I dream intensely for that time and feel restored afterwards...
I have done some research about this and basically understand why THC affects REM sleep cycles the way it does, but have found little in the way of solutions to this problem. Some people offer melatonin as a solution to the problem, but I have found it to be only a partial solution at best, with side-effects that are not desirable (long-term use leads impairs your bodies ability to produce it, feeling groggy in the morning, etc...)
My question to all of you pot-smokers out there is:
What have you done personally to combat THC's effect on your sleep patterns?
any and all input is welcome... thanks to anyone who replies!

Roll, roll, roll a joint,
twist it at the end...
spark it up and take a hit,
and pass it to a friend!
HEY!

I smoke 2-3 times a week, and I can never get a good night's rest when I'm high. I take melatonin and valerian root on a regular basis, and that doesn't seem to help at all. Unfortunately, it looks like there's really nothing that I can do about it...except not smoking weed when I want to get a solid night's sleep. It's a bummer, but it looks like that's just the way that it is for me. Hopefully you will have better luck.

I usually smoke weed everyday or every other day, and i have found that taking melatonin and benadril help me get sleep. On nights when i smoke a blunt before i sleep i usually just take three or four melatonin pills and that helps me sleep.

5-HTP, the precursor to serotonin which can be bought where vitamins are sold helps restore sleep cycles so i understand.

holy shit! what was in that.... errr.... acid... fuck!

thanks for the replies... this site seems to give alot of info on melatonin and THC:

My current take on it is:
- Melatonin can be used to restore a more restful sleep (more REM sleep), but can make you feel groggy in the morning and should not be used too much becuase it will hinder your bodies ability to produce melatonin in the longterm.
- The only real way to get enough restful sleep while being a pothead is to not be a true pothead and skip some days.
I know there must be some potheads out there who smoke heavily everyday and don't seem to suffer from sleep problems (or maybe there aren't?). If you are one of those people, please respond...
if I can't resolve this problem I may have to start seriously cutting back on my smoking....
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read an article (sorry I lost source, search for THC and melatonin on a search engine and it might pop up) and it stated that after test subjects were given 1 joint their melatonin levels in their brains jumped 4000% of normal! That's a lot!
Just thought that was interesting...

maybe just try timing your smoking so that you will be comin down and gettin tired at about the time you wanna go to sleep, it works for me and i smoke daily. i also have quite nice dreams when i do this...maybe im just not normal though

When I smoke a lot in the night and then go to sleep i feel really SHITTY during the whole night. I get weird ass dreams that are really annoying. I guess its just one of the bad sides of cannabis.
I guess trying to smoke your last j a couple of hours before you hit the sack could help.
Better yet dont smoke everyday.

Hey, ive tried melatonin for sleep and i never felt groggy or had ne problems with producing dependance on melatonin for sleep - where did u get this stuff saying it can reduce the bodies natural production? my understanding was that 5htp and melatonin are constantly shuffled as part of the limbic system and that the only rate-limiting factors on melatonin production was the availablity of precursors or the animo itself...
personally i found melatonin great, especially in producing a deeper more rem type of sleep, and i smoke pot every day maybe 5-8 times a day...

fer some reason, takin a few hits about an hour before i plan to go to bed always gives me the best night of sleep. I smoke about 6-9 times per month though, sometimes less. Whenever I do, I always sleep great and wake up feeling rested.

yeah i had a friend who had the EXACT same problem (lack of REM sleep)
when i went through heavy smoking periods, i'd notice that i woke up thinking "fuck i didnt dream at all last night" and then later on in the day remembering fragments of my dream (progressively thru the day)...guess that wouldve been the old short term memory playing up

I have never had a problem with sleep. I smoke not every day, but probably 5 days a week on average, and multiple times a day during those days. I always fall asleep fairly fast, and I never feel less rested when I awake than if I'd been sober.
There's of course the occasional time when I am still high when I wake up in the morning, but other than that, I tend to wake up and feel well rested.
EDIT: and for the record, I never remember my dreams. Haven't remembered one in, well....so long as I can remember.
homeboyJim huh? I don't know many homies named jim.

I sleep sooo good when I'm high! It makes me sleep all night without waking up usually. When I have a lot of dreams during the night I wake up feeling extremely unrested...my dreams are very tiring!
