Im a student at the university of memphis. to use our schools internet, we had to go through a registration process. it stated that i had to read and agree to the terms of registration, but i never read them. when i completed the process and rebooted my internet connected right away.

But i was wondering, am i being monitered? Am i red flagged for visiting a harm reduction site? Could this lead to the banhammer to my internet privleges? EXPULSION>? :)

I doubt you would be red flagged, but im sure they can look at your history. I wouldnt be using their computers to look at sites such as these. Use your laptop!

why don't you read the terms of registration? i am sure that their policies are clearly stated there.

and no, I doubt they have the manpower to monitor internet usage of thousands of students.

I wouldn't worry about it. I post on here from my university's internet and have never had a problem. They don't have the manpower to wade through thousands of students' browsing history.

I posted from the university the two years I lived on their campus. I still log in from time to time at school. I really wouldn't worry about it.

I was only ever been disconnected because of "illegal downloading". It was annoying because I wasn't even downloading illegally... I was getting torrents from http://www.archive.org/. I explained all this to them but it didn't matter. All that happened to me was I got disconnected for 2 weeks. Anyway, the only thing they were monitoring was how much bandwidth I was taking up/sifting through files on my computer.

The only time I've ever seen the university try to follow one around to incriminate them was by going through facebook pictures (after reports had been written up) to find evidence of illegal drinking. It worked but I think only because your full name is on facebook and this was before limited profile was an option.

Long story short, I doubt they're going to have the manpower to check your history. Even if they do I doubt they do anything about it.

I'd banhammer you for that, purely because you were sucking up the bandwidth that could otherwise be used by the librarians trying to conduct database tutorials, and then the database crashes cause the network sucks cause of all the students downloading torrents, and I look dumb and it's all YOUR fault...wait, what?

OP: I doubt you have anything to worry about. If you're really concerned, I'm sure they have their IT code of conduct for students available somewhere on their website.

Which, incidentally, I found in less than a second using Google.

I did much, much worse things than browse harm reduction message boards using my college's internet access for two years and nothing ever happened. SWIM even set up an FTP site using the college's network and charged people off campus for access...

I wouldn't worry.
