Possible to demethylate DMT into tryptamine with open flame?

Hello, a friend had a bowl (reg mj bowl) that contained about a quarter G of DMT and about 200mg of b caapi resin (extraction). He had been puffing on that every once in awhile over the course of a couple weeks. As he progressed with his mini-trips he noticed the effects of the drugs were getting more and more physical...not exactly in an unpleasant way but he did notice more physical effects like shortness of breath, raise in BP/pulse, etc. Effects that tryptamine would give (that he recalled from reading in TIHKAL).

Anyways, is it possible to demethylate DMT into tryptamine so what was happening over the course of this guy's smoking sessions was he was slowly torching his DMT into partially tryptamine? Or, was this just a tolerance issue.

Thanks ya'll :D

The amount of tryptamine required to cause unpleasant peripheral effects is really disproportionate to the amount of DMT actually being smoked (as you will know from TiHKAL). Also as FnB has noted tryptamine is but one of the many possible pyrolysis products so this lowers the amount even further.
I don't know the half life of the actives from b.caapi but it is possible that MAOI effect was accumulating (particularly if it is a irreversible inhibitor, so new MAO must be synthesized by the body, extending the effect further) if redosing occurred before complete elimination of MAOI or MAOI effect from the last use?

DMT exhibits pronounced tachyphylaxis with repeated dosing, so if you are continually smoking it you're gonna get less and less psychoactive effects (but still probably some of the peripheral ones)

what man? I don't know about that. I've been smoking a lot of DMT and only VERY recently has the experience changed (new material and new smoking technique and introduction of MAOIs to the mix). Its taken a LOT of time to wear some DMT tolerance into my brain.

FB, I guess I'm asking how likely you think it could be effects stemming from a chemical other than DMT from the DMT breaking down under direct flame? And if one should worry/think about that for terms of physical safety?

oh you think its just the difference in marijuana effects? that could be possible, except usually my friend smokes just the DMT/b caapi mix, very rarely does he throw a nugget in the bowl and burn that down with it. So, sometimes you could be right, but predominantly he's smoking just tryptamines and MAOI.

I read Strassman's book about DMT, and seemingly there wasn't all that much tolerance produced via the IV route.

They only did IV and IM during their studies, so take it as you will, but it didn't seem to produce much tolerance.

strassman is bunk. let's never use his book as a 'reference'. most of it is crap, imo.

also I think that just four injections is really not long enough to track the way tolerance develops (for me its taken maybe a hundred sessions to start realizing some receptor downregulation.

It depends on the time frame. I've noticed massive increase in tolerance when repeatedly dosing.

It annoys me that he's pushed so hard on the "dmt is released after death and during near death experiences" thing despite the no evidence thing.

I can smoke DMT all night long and have never noticed any kind of tolerance.

Strange but true :)

I have no idea, I'm just thrpowing it out as a possibilty in answer to the question if it's possible as pyrolysis of any material generally leads to a whole range of products, some of which can be very nastly (eg acreolins from burning food or a lot of different organic matter)

Yeah I know strassman is a bit of a weirdo, but tolerance is a fairly easily observable effect, no?

but you have to smoke DMT many days in a row for tolerance to develop (at least ime). I smoked it a few weeks ago for 6 or 7 days in a row and by the end the same dose was very weak in comparison to the starting effects (on the first few days).

before that I had never smoked that many days in a row (with larger doses, I had done low doses every day which doesn't seem to build tolerance at all).

I would experience tolerance in a single sitting. But this was dealing with smoking gram+ over the course of a few hours but by the end of the night 100+mg successfully smoked in three hits would not produce what 40mg did at the beginning of the night.

hmm interesting, I never smoked that much in one sitting. I can usually only handle (lungwise) a quarter gram at MOST (and thats if the deems is really pure).

a full dose of the yellow crystals is about as much as I can handle of less than pure dmt.
