So you get these portable record players that look like suitcases. I think the first "brand" was the Crosley but there are loads of knockoffs. They look pretty cool and make good gifts but the first response you see on any audio forum when someone asks about getting their first deck is "Do NOT get a Crosley". The sound quality sucks they use the cheapest parts possible and the needles are apparently (though this is disputed) prone to scratching records.
Anyway my sister gave me hers because she never used it and I love it. My own record player is currently in storage because I have a box room and nowhere to put it and we already have a flashy sound system downstairs (which I can't work and am scared to touch) so this is perfect for me.
I can just plop it down in any room of the house and spin a record. Currently sat in the conservatory getting baked and listening to Transience by the transcendent Steven Wilson. Yesterday I listened to Ok Computer by Radiohead in the kitchen while I was cooking dinner.
I don't even mind the shitty built in speakers I think they give the music a nice retro feel
