Poppy pod tea - experienced - strong

Source discussion isn't allowed, so I removed some posts.

I've had 5 spine surgeries including 2 fusions and have been taking opiates for 8 years. For the last 5 its been copious amounts of Tramadol. I heard about poppy tea and decided to try it. I bought 25 lg long stem poppies and started out with 5. First let me tell u I teach Culinary Arts at the college level and have been a chef for 40 years, so I can follow a friggin recipe. I resurched the process for making the tea and wanted to start off small thus the 5 pods. Made two cups and spent the next ten minutes trying to gak the shit down. Waited an hour...nothing. Did five more...bupkis. Tried the rest (15), plus the old pulp from the first 10 stems and all. Steeped it for two hours and came up with what I was hoping was 3 cups of heaven. Nope...I got a slight buzz but 25 and a slight buzz? Not what I was looking for. No pain alleviating at all. Either I did it wrong or all u guys r pulling my Johnson.

Oh they work, they definitely work. Could be you just got bad quality pods.

I'm gonna get more in this week...try again, the other road is to give up and just deal with the agony. Not an option. What started me on this was two weeks aga I found myself in the ER with a bunch of torn scar tissue from, believe it or not coughing. The pain associated with ripped scar tissue is unbelievable. I was given a ton of morphine to, as the Dr. Said "break the chain of pain". 5hours later I was released with a dozen Tylenol #3. Yeah! That's gonna help. I ordered the pods two days later. I need this to work cause the medical community just dosnt give a shit.

Good luck soxman. Although in preparing the pods you probably did follow a viable procedure, and just got unlucky with the pods, it might help to know these tips:

  • The goodies are in the cell walls of the plant material, therefore you should grind them as finely as possible to facilitate optimal extraction with the water.
  • Alkaloid content can vary widely, even between individual pods, therefore you should grind up your entire batch and mix it thoroughly to ensure a homogeneous strength batch, allowing predictable and safe dosing.

Also you can make poppy seed tea, though you have to find a good bulk source for unwashed seeds. I don't do opiates anymore but I used to go to this discount/salvage grocery store in town, they have bulk poppy seeds that are very strong. Eventually I started buying 25 pound boxes from them for about $2/pound. A dose for me was about 3 pounds. Works very well, actually I have had better luck with those than pods, however it can be a challenge to find good seeds. And from most places they're quite expensive.

Thx for the tips guys. I went back to the ER and made them give me some Oxy.

Just finished brewing new batch of ppt. This time for was much better. I have had to take opioids for a good part of my life due to degenerative disc desiease, but never have I experienced the feeling of quiet calm sedation that this tea brought me. The anelgeasic properties were better than I expected and that in itself was worth it, but the feeling of calm and peace was in its own way euphoric and lasting. Percocet type opioids always made me feel restless. Not with the tea. If its a choice between pills and patches or this...no contest!

Hey soxman,

Glad you got some satisfaction from the sleepy poppy ;).

I also have DDD and so consequently have been using codeine for years, its short duration is no longer satisfactory so I've been using poppy tea (also 'pod putty', which makes dosing less unpleasant) once or twice a week for a couple of years. This dosing regimen has helped me avoid dependence, which is really important because withdrawal from opium is terrible.

Forgive me if you know this, but it's important that you [and anyone reading] understand that preparations of the whole poppy, such as poppy tea, are essentially equivalent to raw opium. The main active compound of opium is morphine, which by itself is seriously habit-forming. But opium contains a range of opiates capable of causing dependence, together these alkaloids can cause a stronger dependence than morphine alone, some say pod tea withdrawal is more difficult than heroin withdrawal.

Perhaps you will use it regularly and become dependent, and that's fine, as long as you know what you're getting into. I personally wouldn't want to be dependent on it, but if frequent use improves your quality of life then I understand completely. Once again, sorry if this seems overly conservative (some bluelighters have criticised me for my approach, saying that I'm a 'scare-monger'), but I wouldn't want to encourage someone to use powerful drugs without also ensuring that they are well informed of the risks. The mains risks being: dependence, side-effects (mainly constipation), overdose risk (particularly if combined with another CNS depressant such a alcohol or benzodiazepines).

Be informed and you will be safe. Use responsibly and the poppy will treat you well; you can look forward to full-day analgesia and the best quality of sleep you've had for years!

Libertine..thank u so much for your thoughts, but thee USS Dependence has already sailed, in fact it sailed 9 years ago with a dependence on Tramadol. U want to talk about bad withdrawal Tramadol is like an opiate plus it has a mood enhancer, so when coming off it you get the usual carnival of symptoms but also extremely powerful depression. I plan on using the tea sporadically when the pain is just to much. Again thank you for your thoughts and I believe as u do that information is emparitive when using any opiate.

this is an old thread but maybe someone will know. I don't have a coffee maker, is there a way to make pod tea with out it? (Well we have a coffee maker but it's one of those Keurig types, not the old school kind.)

Don't use a coffee maker. Just steep in water and strain through a tea strainer (or t shirt or sock). If using pods you'll need a coffee grinder. Seeds just water.

Questions RE: fresh pods

I've got about 10 rather small poppies growing right now. They are still in the ground. One of them is slightly larger and appears to be "sweating."

My question is simply: Can I do anything with these? I'm a long time poppy seed tea drinker, and I'm hoping for a stronger effect. I had a complete gastrectomy about two years ago and many subsequent surgeries which have resulted in lots
of scar tissue that continually tears. My doctors refuse to do anything about it, beyond MORE surgery. My pain levels are so high and so constant that my quality of life is quite poor. Severe depression, the beginnings of suicidal thoughts.

So there's my "disclaimer." Could someone tell me (hopefully) how to use what I've got? My seed consumption is getting expensive. Thanks, and apologies if I'm breaking any rules by posting this here. I'm quite the noob.
