Hypothetically, is it possible for poppy plants to survive in the midwest, US? If so what time of year should you plant. I used search engine to no avail. Any links would be appreciated to cure my curiosity.

I cannot cite this information im providing you but from my knowledege I remember that if you are in North America or Europe you can plant 2 times a year. You can plant once in the spring say May in Canada or April in America (more southern states), then again in the fall.....apparently the winter cold will not destory it.
That wasn't the question though...back on topic

I know that poppy plant is more resistant than a lot of other plants including cannabis, and i know that it can grow at both high and low altitudes which means it can stand relatively cold temperatures.

I say if your considering planting some in May you are well past any dangers of frost or anything like that.

Umm I'm pretty damn sure my mom had them growing here in Iowa when I was a kid. They seemed to do just fine. I'm sure you could google poppies and it will tell you what kind of climate they need.

thanks for the info guys. i remember like a year ago i saw a really neat thread of a guy showing pictures step by step on his grow. i cant seem to find it for the life of me...anyone know what im talking about?

SWIM has a lot of seeds and land in a hot dry area of northern california.

Is it too late to plant the seeds now?

i live in texas and planted late january and dunno when i will plant next i do know the intense heat hurts the poppies so i say it depends if you are in northern or southern midwest, even if you were in minnesota near the border i would say put them in the ground asap as it could be getting to late it usually takes 120 days give or take 10-20days so may 14 it would prob be end of september early october in my opinion that should yield something (may not be optimal but that it something you learn from experience)
side note: i got my seeds from wisconsin and while seeds dont necessarily mean that they were growing the poppies there but i am relatively confident it can be done and when i was doing research i found certain articles that claimed poppies could be grown anywher in the contiguous 48 but yea i would use this weekend (or better yet this week if possible) to prep some soil and get started. dont expect tons of opium from a small garden plot but it is fun, one of the most self rewarding and pleasing pastimes IMO had a blast would do it again, recommend it to anyone even if you dont like opiates or dont wanna risk it go out it plant something anything it is fun enjoyable, it benfits the earth and it is aesthletically pleasing

What excuse can I use to grow poppies without my mom being suspicious? I don't want to have to water them everyday either. Perhaps grow them in a ditch somewhere would be an option if they don't need any special care.

You can pull a crop I'm certain. They grow easily in most of southern Canada, even the prairies which have a short season. There are some very fast maturing varieties too.

Mui knows.

Poppies can grow in just about any conditions. The are sensitive to extreme heat when they are young, however.
Their are two times a year that is ideal for sowing them. Sowing in late Fall will give you an early spring bloom, and is recommended in hotter regions. Sowing in early spring is recommended for colder climates, and will give you early summer blooms.

Please don't only grow a garden of poppies. It's obvious when you do, that you're not doing so for the beauty of the flower.

Well I'm not talking LOTS. Just putting them along the fence line. If police ask, I don't want to have to get the weed wacker out.

growing them without the intent to ingest or convert them in any way shape or form is entirely legal, you don't need an excuse. i believe there are one or two states that don't allow growing them at all, check your local laws to be sure. be smart.

In my opinion, local police don't go around checking backyards and shit for this kind of stuff. And even if they by some happen chance were in your yard/land and seen them growing, I would say most cops wouldn't know a poppy plant from their asshole, let alone the laws for them. I think they care 100% more about marijuana, but cannabis is very distinguishable to law enforcement. Even if a seasoned officer who knows the laws about poppy plants catches you growing a few (not a whole field) they probably wouldn't arrest you or anything like that. Not saying it's not possible, because if it is illegal you can technically be charged, but the likelihood of it happening is slim to none. Especially getting spotted growing them unless you have nosey neighbors or something. Police officers just don't go snooping around backyards looking for illegal plants being grown (other than like I said more strongly, marijuana).

This would be one of the last weeks you could start poppy (somni) in the midwest/northeast US.

They flower in july and ideally should have been planted the first or second week of may. (after last frost)

Further south(say, below ohio) you could plant maybe the middle of april. But just make sure their is no risk of frost or use a cold frame.

the CA state flower is a poppy. when we were younger we were always told it was illegal to pick the state flower (since it's protected under law). come to find out, the flower actually has recreational value! makes me wonder what the real reason for being told not to pick them was ;)

side note: please don't go around picking CA poppies to try and get high. there are better ways.

isnt the california poppy a different species that doesnt contain any alkaloids^^^^

got this from the web

Eschscholzia californica was the first named member of the genus Eschscholzia, which was named by the German botanist Adelbert von Chamisso after another botanist,

not a papaver genus
and also
Extract from the California poppy acts as a mild sedative when smoked. The effect is far milder than that of opium, which contains a different class of alkaloids[

so in a way its not the same genus right

^ yes, the CA poppy is a different genus. i was just pointing out that the CA poppy grows wild here. i'm not sure if they need the same growing conditions but i would assume that the time to plant papaver poppies would be on par with the CA poppy. again, this is just an assumption, i haven't researched it to any extent.
