Pope Francis attacks drug legalisation in Latin America

Regardless of this, everyone is expected to live the way Christians want you to live. And this is a problem for me. It's no longer whether or not I believe what you're saying; it's whether or not I live in a place where you've influenced the laws that govern my behavior.

That is unacceptable. Preach all you want to me, but don't send men with guns to force me to live in a way acceptable to you.

Of course I agree with you.
However, it is always important to keep an open mind.
I have no love for Christianity, or for your average Christian, but I have learned that there are some - a few, at least - who don't care how I live, and would never try to enforce their standards on others.
Of course, they probably must think that I am going to Hell for my beliefs, which is pretty sickening in itself, but then again maybe some of them keep open minds, and don't have such an Us-and-Them, black-and-white, all-or-nothing view of things.

Hating someone just because they are Christian is no better than Christians hating non-believers.
While I think that their book is ridiculous, and their philosophy is controlled by some disgusting power-mongers who would rather be raping young boys than helping the poor, for example, I often remind myself not to be quite so judgmental about individuals who believe in the religion.
Sheep? Maybe. Very possibly.
But if I hate them solely on the basis of their beliefs, then I am not much better.
(I can still find something to dislike about most individuals who have those beliefs, but not all of them.)

So he cares for drug addicts, yet supports them being put in prison and having their lives ruined?

Fucked my girlfriend who is on her rags before hitting a salsa club to mix it with the locals. If I was catholic I might have been worried about the number of gods rules I broke last night ;)

lol... Oh that's cool, I thought you might have swallowed it filled with some cocaine to bring home. =D

How long are you over there for? That'd be mad.

Oh how smart is this guy? So he accepts that drug dealing attracts violence and power by gangs, but is against stopping such cartels by legalizing drugs? Hmmm, very smart indeed. Look at your own church first. Here in Australia they have touched kids for all eternity and only now has it been coming out. Address these problems first fucker.

Lets criticize the pope on speaking against drugs, but when it comes to Obama endorsing raids on medial marijuana shops hardly any of you liberals bat an eye and then you left wingers keep worshiping him anyways. Hypocrisy!

Hard recreational use of drugs are an evil poison to society. Anyone who honestly things legalizing all drugs will lead to a better society with improved health, less crime, and your version of 'utopia' in your country are insane ... you have probably fried your brain so much from all the drugs you've done you can no longer think straight. Bunch of slaves. Time for rehab.

This is such a straw man argument! Go ahead and find recent Obama worship in the media forum, and then we can talk.

From what I've seen, nobody likes Obama here. At least not any more.

I could be wrong. Maybe there's one person here still on the bandwagon.

You sound angry. Maybe a little exercise or deep breathing? Not sure who you are railing on, but we like to discuss things here more than simply attack hypothetical viewpoints. Would you like to join in? We would be glad to hear your opinions and ideas, but please make sure to refrain from attacking anyone here.

I am a firm believer in legalizing all drugs. I also have am a professional academic at a large, prestigious research institution. I make my living by teaching, reading, writing, and doing research. So it is safe to say that I can "still think straight" :)
Nothing I do has any relation to slavery. I am also unlikely to be deemed insane by a psychologist, though my friends often use this word with me... Nor am I addicted to any drugs other than caffeine. So rehab seems like a bit of an overkill, wouldn't you say?

I am also very, very liberal in almost every way. And yet, I have never supported Obama. I consider him to be a plastic, fake human being, just as Bush I and Bush II were. I despise the majority of his policies. He is a Washington insider, more concerned with votes than doing what is right. He stocks the FDA with ex-Monsanto VPs, for God's sake! He attacks medical cannabis, despite his promises not to do so! Essentially a worthless human being, imo.

So, are you also able to discuss your ideas without attacking anyone? (Except, maybe, Obama =D)
I would love to talk with you. :D

I'm not angry. I just don't see how this is newsworthy. The majority of people in political positions and people who have worldwide influential voices are against legalizing drugs. Are you really surprised?

You seem to be a more level headed liberal. I wasn't attacking anyone specific or saying anyone here is worshiping Obama, however the liberal media worships him no matter what he does.

This is the problem you see, people think the Pope speaks for ALL catholics somehow, and they lump everyone together as one. Then there's comments in here and other topics like "fuck catholics" because of what a few catholics have said or done. It's like me lumping all liberals together because of what Obama says and then saying fuck liberals, you see how extremely biased that is?

I would like to hear your reasons for why you think legalizing drugs such as meth, heroin, crack, would be a good thing for the health of society as a whole. Please share :)

Worrying about what the pope thinks of your drug use is like worrying about what your gym instructor thinks of your diet. It is Devine role to save your soul, it's up to you to decide whether you want to be lonely in heaven or with everyone else in hell.

We could start with the observation that in practice, drug prohibition does not diminish drug use. Add to that the fact that because of drug prohibition, the US imprisons a greater percentage of its citizens than any other nation on earth. To me, though, the most important reason is that one cannot truly be healthy if one is not free. This is my opinion though.

Because health could be more focused on instead of the criminal side. Trying to enforce the bans on these substances doesn't work, people still have access to them and use them, but not as safely as if they were measured doses made in clean, pharmaceutical environments. Instead people OD and die off various drugs, many off PMA for example which they thought they were buying MDMA, but since anyone who gets away with it can make the pills and put whatever they wont in it and make tax free money from it, it creates illness and death from a usually very safe substance. With heroin people OD and die from fluctuating potency, cocaine you have gang deaths and turf wars and cartel wars over it, if it were legal and packaged they'd know what they were getting and using, like people who use OXY for example. Then you have adhd drugs, people use that that arent supposed to, so why cant people use heroin, meth or cocaine safely as possible? The way it is now, major police resources are wasted trying to stop drugs, but they are still very available, so it's a waste of time and money, not to mention people are being locked up for long periods of time and for life in some instances or given death in some countries and huge profits are going back to organised crime and funding more illegal activities like guns for more killing for control of the black market.

All drugs have side effects and loads of legal drugs can cause bizarre behaviour and lead to OD deaths or harm. So why are some ok and some others aren't? Cannabis, lsd, heroin, cocaine, meth and aphet's, etc should all be marketed and sold in a regulated industry, taxed and packaged with quit lines and help lines and useful information and phone numbers of places IV users can get local needles etc. Then alot of the profits will be taken from organised crime and we might see less deaths from drug turf wars and less deaths and harm from OD's due to a pre set dose pure product and more tax going to the governments for other things like roads and schools and transport and less profits going to organised crime.

People who dont wont to use these substances don't have to and wouldn't, just like people who don't want to drink or smoke don't. Alcohol is a dangerous drug, tobacco is a dangerous drug, both very addictive, kill millions all over the world over the years, but most of the black market has been taken away and replaced by a model where people get paid to do legal jobs to make them and sell them etc. That same model could possibly work for all drugs. It's a huge industry, just like the legal cannabis one is. Look at all the jobs it could supply, instead of police running around in circles and never really getting anywhere and jailing people for handling the products.

As said many times before drug use and addiction should be focused on as a health issue not a criminal one, I'm not sure if there'd be more users or not if all drugs were legal, but the way it is now more people are dying from use and fluctuating doses and adulterated drugs and being part of 'the game' than would or should if they were all legal I think.

Anyone who honestly things legalizing all drugs will lead to a better society with improved health, less crime, and your version of 'utopia' in your country are insane ... you have probably fried your brain so much from all the drugs you've done you can no longer think straight. I hardly use any illegal drugs anymore, I stopped experimenting with all that ages ago, I might a couple of times a year but that's all, I'm hardly fried or need rehab.

Marijuana (salesmen) traffickers - Dealers of Death.

I can't wait until marijuana is legal everywhere.
