I don't believe 'delusional self interest'.If you consider caring for others and NOT just ones self(Many just out right don't care for others).

It's for the greater good and you can put whatever 'spin' on it you like.I don't agree and it's NOT just for self serving purposes(Yes,I may know more than others on certain issues.And same with others.In a recent survey 80% of Australia's are considered politically ignorant.Which would say alot.).
I'm sure many others feel this way too (Maybe or maybe NOT on here).

Anyway,this is quite an interesting read this thread :D

The greater good according to... You? Who decides? This may come as a surprise, but you can find plenty of folks on either side of the political spectrum who think they are doing the whole world a fucking favour by holding their particular political views. Jeez, i'm sure when the liberals rushed through their anti-gay marriage bills they thought they were looking after the 'greater good' in their own twisted way, too.

And 90% of statistics are made up on the spot ;) I simply find it ironic you can talk about the greater good, then imply that 80% of the population is unqualified in their opinions. Your knowlege of 'greater good' seems to be a pretty elitist concept.

^^ The reason you would lose your AWAs is because Labor is ideologically opposed to 'individual contract' style workplace agreements. Labor would change the IR legislation (Workplace Relations Act Cth) so that they no longer exist. You would then be covered by the appropriate enterprise bargaining agreement, or state/federal award. Enjoy (not) & don't forget to get your union membership form ready.

(so was rather chuffed when i ran into andrew bartlett in a brisbane cafe..... disgrace or not, anyone who steals wine from an opposing political party is a-ok in my books =D =D =D =D =D )
 
Theres aboustly no point of me voting for Labor because i am surrounded by die hard Liberal supporters (Northern beaches, like Manly and Balgowlah.) It sucks in our election system that my shout for Latham wont be heard but oh well. I guess i'll vote Greens with labor preferences. Aleast its better then the stinkin independents here...
 
the Greens are pretty cool. i've met a few Greens politicans, and seen some go head to head with other prominent party members in pre-election debate. and its hard not to be impressed.

here we have a party that is overlooked because of their reputation in the 70s and society likes to think they've grown up from their weed smoking tie-die days and now votes labour or liberal.

but this party is made up of some of the most intelligent, rational, and strategic genius in our nation. their list of priorities take a long term approach to rebuilding our society. but they also take the environment, that is, the actual land which sustains our very lives into consideration.

war or no war, australia has a major salinity problem that is wiping out the wheat belt, entire river systems, and so much agricultural land. we're only just now beginning to realise the enormous task ahead of us in keeping our heads above salty water. and many scientists agree that in as little as 10 years we will see major impacts on water and food supply. sure people die in terrorism, but we all die if we ignore the health of our land. its like my dirty kitchen and how it approaches bio hazard phase from my ignorance and neglect.

our health care is going to hell. regular health checks are IMPORTANT in regular life. but the cost of visiting the doctor has in the last 5 years blown so far out of proportion that many students and low income people are not getting the general medical help they need. these are people who are also statistically more likely to develop depression, drug and alcohol addictions, stress and anxiety, etc. we should be making access to healthcare easier for these people and what liberal is not meeting up to that standard.

i'm gonig out partying now but education is also important.

though brown, the more attention i pay to the greens, is striking me more and more as a tosser (though i don't particularly like latham much anymore, and howard is unequivocally a cunt), which sucks. that said, all the greens members i've read of/about, have seemed really fucking great; intelligent, liberal, fair etc.

i'm still voting greens :)
 
anybody watch the debate?

interesting to see the worm results. there seemed to be a complete lack of trust in the prime minister by the audience. scary though for labor supporters in how latham ended up winning the debate with the same numbers that beazley did, look how that election turned out. just like bush, howard doesn't seem to mind using the memory of those killed through terrorism to prop up his campaign.

i was playing basketball, so missed the debate (forgot to tape it of course). good to see latham won - 67% to 33 - but like silvia said, it's important to note that it's the same as beazley's previous result.

that said, it's good to see latham getting a little bit of positive media feedback for the moment; his image needs a bit of a boost.
 
Watching what the worm did while Howard said certain things cracked me up to no end :)

I can't say I've watched Latham give a speech before but it was definately not what I expected. He seemed calm and reasonable, didn't raise his voice, or resort to swearing and overt personal attacks. Howard really did look like an old dinosaur, or Bush's little henchmen, when his policies were juxtaposed with Lathams...

The problem with the Greens is their pig headed leader Senator Bob Brown (IIRC). It's always got to be his way or no way, which kind of defeats the idea of being in the political arena if you ask me.
 
I really don't know much about politics but in the last few days have been trying to understand as much as I possibly can before the election.
I would like to vote Greens but is that a wasted vote?
