Would you all please stop attacking people based on their political preferences? Giving your reasons for voting Greens or Labor is one thing, but implying that Liberal voters are selfish is another entirely. Any further comments like that will be deleted. I'm only interested in your political opinions, not your moral high ground.

Anna this isn't a personal attack and I think you've made your reasoning quite clear. My ex-girlfriend has two kids and I know from watching her interact with them that there is a bond between mother and child that is stronger than anything on this planet.

Therefore it is hard to believe that you think Howard's policies are the best for your children. Did you miss Howard's education reforms of the last two years?

I don't have a crystal ball but I am telling you this with 100 percent assuredness. If Howard is Prime Minister again, not one iota of his pre-election lies will come to be. It isn't rocket science - Howard has not done anything he has promised (for the good of anyone, anyways) in the entire time he has been Prime Minister. Therefore it is ludicrous to assume that this time will be anything different.

The best way I can put it is this..

Voting for Howard the first time can be equated to shooting yourself in the foot. Voting for Howard the second time is like shooting yourself in the stomach because nearly amputating your foot wasn't painful enough for you. Voting for Howard this time is the coup de grace - brains on the wall...

I'm voting liberal.

Firstly I don't think Labor will manage the industrial relations system in Australia very well. AWAs (introduced by the WRA 1996) have had some significant penetration in the labour market of recent. Abolishing them and returning to a centralised wage-fixing and bargaining system would seriously undermine business competitiveness in this country.

Secondly, I don't feel comfortable with the government being run by a bunch of union-bred lackeys that have seriously different ideological views on a number of policy areas: healthcare, education, IR, etc.

Thirdly, the senate hearings into the Mike Scrafton affairs that were passed by Labor and minor parties on the last day of sitting was another thinly veiled attempt at trying to undermine John Howard's credibility and win political points on an issue that has been beaten to death. It was an abuse of parliamentary privelage and in the end the result was John Howard was exonerated to an extent with the evidence brought forward about the confidential phone records...

Lastly, I just plainly don't like Mark Latham. People seem to be able to drag John Howard's name through the dirt with remarkable ease, well what about the Mark Latham that we knew and loved (not many of you did probably) prior to him becoming leader of the opposition. He was (and is) a scoundrel, and I would hate to see him lead this country.

It's clearly going to be an extremely close race. And very exciting as well!

edit: fixed spelling errors - sorry was in a rush! (:

but i'm not a fan of the greens either....and even if i did vote, theyre never gonna win, and theyre hardly gonna get enough seats to make a bigger difference than last time.
sorry if that sounds horribly negative!

That's the problem. If everyone thought "well no one else is going to vote that way so my vote won't make a difference" then it won't! If enough people did then maybe the greens party would have a decent say in the run of things. You did say your not particulary fond of them though so it doesn't matter i guess in your situation. Just wanted to point out that if people keapt voting green then maybe their possibly COULD be a change. I also think that over the next few years (especially beyond the next decade) that the greens will hold more and more power and get more and more votes because the new generations of people will hopefully have the same like mindedness ~ to care about the planet and the people that live in it over money.

ps - just read the last page after making that last post...

anna - i don't think anyone is attcking you personally (although i don't know what was said that you deleted) They are just giving their views against what you have said about it. Kinda like me getting defensive in the "drugs and kids" thread really. I thought people were personally attacking me but really they just had different points of view. Remember that one? :)

Sorry anna! but my political opinion is that currently most 'Liberal' voters are selfish.I'm NOT implying it.I mean it.I feel this because of your reasons for voting Liberal and the reasons I've heard many other 'Liberal' voters give.

I guess you don't like disenting voices either.

Nah it's cool, the part I deleted was an actual personal attack, but I just want people to be fair to other voters, not just me :) In the same way that I wouldn't say "most Greens supporters are filthy hippies", I want to try to leave as many of the generalisations as possible out of this thread. I don't want to censor anyone, but I do want to protect people's feelings and opinions.

That's me done for this thread, I've said my piece :) Happy voting!

I've just read all the pages because this year I'm actually interested in voting, I did vote last year for the first time that would of counted, before that I'd say I was young and stupid to of thrown it away by voting for my dog and such.

I'm voting Green because I care about the envrionment and know the trouble Australia is in!

in the past 3 years I've had a chance to vote, I've always donkey-voted, that to me, IS STUPID.....

this is the first year I've taken an active interest in voting for the right choice I believe in.... and I will be voting for Mark Latham.

so I'm proud to give him my first ever (REAL) vote.

he seems like such a genuine real human being, unlike lots of other scumbags before him.

^^^ :)

and btw, i support anna here (to an extent ;)): i'm happy for people to continue voicing their opinions (and for the record, i also think most liberal voters are such on entirely selfish grounds), but if it gets personal, posts will be deleted.

there is a line guys: don't cross it, please.

Wakeup call. All voting is selfish. Either you are voting out of tangible self interest (some election promise to make your life better) or delusional self interest "I wan't what is best for the country and everybody" (read: you know better than everyone else, who are morons. Aren't you smart).

^^^ oh of course, but some people really ARE smarter than others. so shouldn't they try to convince the peons that their vote is best changed?

/end devil's advocate styleee fascism ;)

^ Well I'm not a filthy hippy, I like my showers, but I will be voting green (labour will probably be preferenced 2 or 3 as I know they are the only realistic hope of beating liberal and liberal will be preferenced dead last), I guess you could call me a liberal (In the actual definition sense of the word) environmentalist.

I think what most people forget is that there is more than two parties. This is a multi-party system.

Actually it's a two-party system masquerading as a multi-party system, but I try not to be pessimistic, cynical, and realistic. Self delusion gives me some sort of hope that my speck of life, my moment of time, isn't completely void of any quantity of worth.
