Tehran, Oct 9, IRNA -- Presidential advisor and secretary general of Iran drug control program (IDCP) Ali Hashemi said the Islamic Republic of Iran Police (IRIP) seized close to 90 percent of illicit drugs coming into the country.

Speaking at the ceremony of setting ablaze 40 tons of drugs in tehran, hashemi said "over 113 tons of drugs have been nabbed in the country in the past nine months." this figure is 10 percent higher than that of the same period last year," Hashemi added.

He said over 74 percent of drugs are seized in the eastern region. over 930 drug trafficking gangs have been busted by the police in the same period.

Given the nation`s young population make-up, rapid spread of urbanization, reduction in family control over children and high cost of treatment, the best approach to combat drugs is to reign in demand for them, he said.

Hashemi said campaign against drugs needs strong international will. unfortunately being a neighbor of one of the largest drug producers in the world has contributed to many anomalies in Iran and other neighbors of Afghanistan.

All countries should show more vigor in combating narcotics cultivation and trafficking, Hashemi added.

"Over 13,000 police and army personnel have died in combating drugs in the past few years." Hashemi said that 80 percent of the total world opium is produced in afghanistan and "iran as a neighbor of the war-torn country faces a serious problem in combating drug smuggling."

In the past decade 1,760 tons of assortment of drugs have been seized in Iran and 4,480 drug traffickers killed in clashes with the police, the drug czar underlined.

Hashemi further stressed the need to consider illicit drugs as an international menace, adding "no country can by itself achieve success in this campaign."
