Police hands-off with dope smoking protesters

Police say there was no need for them to intervene when pro-cannabis campaigners lit up on the grounds of Parliament during a protest rally.

Senior Sergeant Scott Miller said police had acted in consultation with the Speaker of the House, Lockwood Smith, and a decision had been made to monitor the situation and act only if there was violence or an attempt to breach the barricades.

"We had a good meeting with the leaders prior to the march; the police role was basically to bring the protest from the park through town - not interfering with the traffic and the public - to Parliament where they were going to stay in the grass area. We were looking for a nice peaceful morning which we had, which was good.

"I don't think it was a situation where we needed to arrest anyone. The actions of the protesters were nice and peaceful; they were orderly...there was no violence. Ours was a monitoring role and to make sure they didn't come past the barriers. Everything was good."

Around 50 pro-cannabis campaigners descended on Parliament this morning, openly smoking cannabis joints and pipes.

Organiser Dakta Green - who runs a cannabis cafe in Auckland and legally changed his name from the less colourful Ken Morgan - said the protest followed a three month nationwide tour which had collected 4300 signatures on a petition calling for cannabis law reform.

Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis party leader Michael Appleby said the fact police had not moved against any of the protesters who were openly smoking the drug showed how attitudes had changed compared to a similar rally in 1996, when a dozen smokers were dragged away and arrested.

"Here, 15 years later, you can see that it's a peaceful demonstration and the police just watch it. They acknowledge that it's a political protest. I applaud their exercising of their discretion.''

Are we seriously gonna let kiwis reform the laws before we do? Inter-country rivalry the way to go in getting laws reformed?

Wow. That is really interesting. Thanks for posting that.

I had no idea N.Z. had Cannabis Cafes. Does anyone know more about this?

Before reading the whole article, I was thinking "this could not have happened in Adelaide" expecting it to be local news (since you're from Adelaide).

I definitely agree with you, we can't let them beat us to the punch.

I'm not sure what our chances are like, given that our laws are leaning away from legalising cannabis, and our news corporation is publishing crap like the article in that other thread from earlier this week/last week.

Np. I had no idea about that either, thought it was very interesting. You can also buy pre-rolled joints at almost every store for about 15 bucks that contain some form of JWH completely legally, and no age restrictions on that as of yet.

My girlfriend is a kiwi and she keeps up with their local news. The government are pushing for tighter controls, the public and the experts are more leaning the other way however. Once america fully endorses medical marijuana and a few other countries in the area do the same Australia will follow suit though.

I've been saying many a time in aus:drugs that until the day the drug legalisation movement is seen in the same light as the struggle for sexual equality, especially the protest movement that faced physical violence and criminal sanction (re the first Mardi Gras) then it will never be taken seriously.

If had the balls (yes I know its ironic) I'd say if several thousand drug users meet in town and had a huge smoke up it would force the government to take note of us. Scenes of police brutality and mass arrest just wouldn't go down.

NZ is also ahead in regards to approving the medical use of cannabis

Medicinal cannabis legalised

Wow I had no idea about that. As someone who can legitimately get a Medical card I am absolutely disgusted with how my country refuses to allow medical Cannabis. Well except for the Mullaway Man, he is the only one I know of in Australia who is doing any kind of medical Cannabis.

I have captained my country in international sport and now want to leave.

hmmm lets do this.

All gather at one spot. and everyone bring out their crackpipes and lets toke it fucken up ???? lol.

But then again, this already happens at carparks at any given rave. :)

A fucking great read, And inspirational... really needed something like this to lift my spirits:)

Whens our turn gonna be folks? I for one would gledly engage in such a protest!!

maybe something the nimbin crew should take on board just from noticeing the thread about the supposed weed trial in nimbin. Wouldnt be impossible with the right numbers, But tryin to get a bunch of aussie pot smokers motivated?? maybe... maybe not:\

yeah dude; i say its gona have to go down in the states first, 2012 is the next legalization campaign in california; once that passes all the other states will follow and then other countries;
unfortunately thats just how it goes no one wants to be the first ones to legalize; i say its gona be a matter of maybe 10 years until most 1st world countries have it legalized

and no age restrictions on that as of yet.

Maybe that's not such a good thing. If cannabis and cannabinoids analogues are legalized, I imagine there would have to be an age limit. Substance use is not a good idea for developing minds. Hell, some medical authorities believe we shouldn't even be drinking until our mid-20's.
