Not everyone deals betterwith pain after being off opiates......pain can alao occur from other problems such as stress which piled on to the pain the person is already enduring equals to more physical pain the person can handle & tackling on all the surgeries she's had & one coning up, its a tough road ahead.......
Maybe the OP is scared that her addiction from the past with heroin will return if shekeeps taking the hydrocodone but to get pain relief, you need pain meds.
OP, good luck with the up coming surgery & don't beat yourself up about your hydrcodone usage.......I'm pretty sure more than 60% of the people on pain meds take more than they should.......hey, obviously pain meds do more than just take away pain, hence the reasons we tend to take more than what's prescribed as how to take it.
I'm not suggesting that she shouldn't take pain meds after surgery. I'm talking about after...long term suggestions.
I suppose it's not set-in-stone science, but I do believe that people who are in PM and taking a lot of opioid medications not only have a harder time dealing with pain for the scientific reasons (hyperalgesia due to the change in the neurological system that opioids produce), but I also believe that people who take a lot of narcotic pain medication (particularly addicts) stop believing in the efficacy of non-narcotic pain meds. Of course, this is not a blanket statement; I can only speak from my experience. For example, when I was using (even when I was only using occasionally), I hardly ever took Tylenol or Motrin for anything. If I had a headache or some fairly minor pain, my brain always jumped immediately to opioids. If I had a cough, I always thought I needed Hydromet or a codeine base cough syrup, even though an OTC product probably would have worked just as well. I'm sure many addicts understand this line of thinking.
Also, in the case of the OP, she's been taking hydro for chronic pain (as well as the surgical pain). If she continues with the meds for chronic pain, she won't be stopping any time soon. If it were just one more surgery and then she was done with the meds, that would be different. However, as I understand it, she'll continue to take the meds for ongoing pain. That's what worries me.
Anyway, again, I feel sorry for seeming pushy or rude, OP!
I totally appreciate your empathy for the OP, TheLostsBoys. And I certainly wish I hadn't come across as so pushy or pedantic initially. But she is self-confessed recovering heroin addict. I'm not sure if you're an addict or not, but if you are, I'm sure you can see the problem in a recovering addict starting back on the opioid train. She stayed of off heroin for four years! That is so commendable! I just don't want her to fall back into old ways.
