I'm considering getting an MM card becaue of my sleeping issues. I'm not just getting it to smoke weed because I really don't do it often, but the last couple of months I just have not been able to sleep at all and I've been having issues with anxiety as well.

The only thing hold me off is I'm in school right now with hopes of becoming a Registered Nurse in the next two years. I'm worried that me getting a card right now, would bite me in the ass when I try to get a job in the nursing field. Can anyone help me with this issue?

I'm In Los Angeles, California btw.

How could they discriminate on you based on what you are prescribed?

It isn't prescribed in California, Its recommended. You're not protected here if you have a MJ card you can still be fired for using pot.( Which isn't what I'm asking, I wouldn't jeopardize my job by smoking) So because of that I'm wondering if Hospitals will just pass on hiring because I had a card 3 years back.

I see, I honestly never knew that. I thought it was prescribed and viewed as any other prescription drug. I wouldn't risk it then if I were in your shoes. Another option could be Marinol, that would put you to sleep I'm sure but is actually a prescription. If that's not viable then I would recommend temazepam for sleeping problems.

I've tried a couple of sleeping medications and I just don't like them. Yeah they put me to sleep but I'm stuck on stupid for about 5 hours after I wake up.

Have you tried temazepam? It gave me no hangover whatsoever. I wouldn't just say weed was your only option.

If you have tried it then you should give Halcion a shot. It has an extremely short half life with absolutely no hangover, even if you sleep for three hours or so.

Why not just, well, ask your doctor and various people in the medical field about what they think? Couldn't hurt to get an opinion or answer from the people you want to work for. Cheers!

I have a doctors appointment next week so i'll ask him about both.

good question. i wonder if there is any case law pertaining to what you're asking.
i live in florida and there's no medical marijuana here cuz it's a fk'd up swamp. background checks and piss tests are done on nurses so thc in ur pee would be a problem.
i'm gonna search around n see if i can find any answer to ur question. if i find anything pertinent, i'll post it.

I have and thats the reason i'm asking the question. They didn't hire themselves and they don't really know either.

Medical marijuana is a scam to get more of your taxes and to get more names in the Big Government database of enemies.

Grow your own cannabis or buy from a friend who does.

You don't need permission to put stuff into your body. The government does not own you.

Medical MJ is convient for me. I don't grow, and none of my local friends do. As for it being a "scam". I for one am happy that it's somewhat decriminalized.

I settled the issue though, Got a fake id and going to get a MJ card under that name.

I'm pretty sure there is complete confidentiality as far as any potential employers gaining access to your record of being a MM patient or using MM.

As for drug testing I know that federal drug tests (like DOT) over rule state law allowing use of Cannabis even with a prescription. This isn't constitutional but neither are a lot of things the federal government does.

I did read about a case awhile back where a guy challenged his employer's decision to fire him based on a positive drug test for THC and the state upheld the employer's right to fire an employee who tests positive for THC. I remember it being a close decision and this was a few months ago so maybe different states will come to different conclusions on the MM drug test issue.

yes, Ross Vs Raging Wire

Here is the things about MMJ in cali. Your name doesn't go in to any statewide database (unless you get a state card, in which case your name isn't in the database but your photo is). So the only people who know are you and your mmj doctor. Now, if your doctor gets raided or otherwise is investigated and is stupid enough/forced to actually give up his patient records (illegal to do so btw Bearman vs California Medical Board) then law enforcement now has a patient list. Important to note though, at those point you still haven't done anything illegal so there is no reason for them to manually enter each name in to some sort of legal patient database.

If you go to a reputable doctor, your privacy will be protected. Any background check will only be criminal and again, you haven't done anything illegal. If you get drug tested, you CAN NOT use your recommendation as a defense against being fired or not hired. Your idea of a fake ID... well thanks to 9/11 and bush, identity crimes are now a felony (as opposed to a civil infraction before) so you are jeopardizing your career a lot more with a potential felony conviction. Also you are risking your doctor's license if you get busted (why prescribing to people with fake ids?). I would just get a rec from a doctor you trust to maintain patient confidentiality and not worry about it. No one cares about mj in cali, you just cant throw up in peoples face (such as failing a drug test).

i could see any history of drug use being an issue, since RNs deal with a lot of narcotics. of course i have heard of several RNs that got busted stealing dilaudid and shit like that. somehow they got to complete some kind of rehab program and got right back to work.

Thanks for the run down. Helps make my decision a lot easier

I am glad to help ya out. If I am not mistaken, the state needs more qualified RNs.

Also noteworthy is that there is an mmj employee protection bill in the CA legislature (sparked by the Ross Vs Raging Wire case) that passes every time it is voted. The governator, however, terminates it (refuses to sign) every time. So if you are looking at a job a couple years ahead, it may be possible that by the time you are applying, a new governor and new employee protections may be in place. Cross your fingers though, I hate politics lol
