Pills stored questionably

I found a few tizanidine hcl 4mg pills I had forgotten I had in the bottom of a small coin purse that also housed a bar of decorative soap. The soap is wrapped in plastic wrap. The pills have been stored in the bag for almost a year.

Is it safe to take these? I would imagine so, but they seem to have absorbed the soap-smell quite heavily and are becoming a bit brittle on the outside. If anything nausea seems to be the most likely possible side effect. Suggestions?

Thanks!

I don't know..

As a general rule pills stored well (in air-tight, dry, dark conditions) tend to be okay, perhaps a little degraded, but it varies from pill to pill. Almost a year is not too long, but it doesn't sound like your storage was air tight or necessarily completely dry or dark. Ingesting a little soap isn't likely to kill you, buI wouldn't like to vouch for the safety of the pills themselves as I don't know anything about the stability or degredation of tizanidine. I found one paper which suggests it might oxidize, but I don't have the full text and the abstract doesn't say what into; it mentiones photodegredation but doesn't say if this is significant or not.

One of those things where in a lot of cases it would be fine to take old pills, but not always. Ideally they should be properly stored, and we really can't say for sure if this will be safe or not - so if you are at all concerned I wouldn't take the risk.

Old medications should really be returned to a pharmacy and a new prescription obtained.
