I recently heard about Picamilone, a novel compound which is supposed to have anxiolytic and nootropic effects. It was created by Russians during the Soviet era and is made by combining Niacin (Vitamin B3) with GABA, which allows GABA to cross the blood-brain barrier.
There are a lot of mixed reports about Picamilone for social anxiety, some claim its a wonder drug and others claim it does nothing. It's rather expensive and can be difficult to get hold of, but I had the opportunity to try it and so decided to give it a go.
The normal recommended dosage is one 50mg capsule for treating anxiety and 100mg is recommended for a more stimulating/nootropic effect.
I tried both doses, starting with 50mg. At this dose it had no effect on my social anxiety but did do something for my mind state and mood. I felt a slight calming of the mind and contented feeling. I put this down to placebo and decided to leave it a few days and try it again.
The next time I decided to try 100mg. At this dose, the effects of the mind calming and contentment feeling returned again, but more pronounced. I didn't find it stimulating, but found it helpful with studying, I could concentrate a bit easier.
I would say it definitely has some effect, but it's effects are quite subtle and taken by itself, it's not effective for social anxiety. It's effects are more like a mood stabiliser, and it would work better in combo with other drugs. I have used it with some success with Tramadol to take some of the edginess away.
Conclusion: At 18 GBP for 120 capsules, it's quite an expensive vitamin pill I think. I'm sure you would get similar results just taking a high dose vitamin B-complex and/or meditating for 20 minutes.
