Photography Photography Thread vs. BL Shutterbugs unite!

if I was buying another DSLR right now, I'd get the Canon 550D, no question. when I've got a bit more money I'm planning on selling my 450D to finance the upgrade. gotta love that full HD video function! (1920 x 1080 @ 30fps) and autofocus in 'live view'. amongst many other things, including 'being a Canon'. <3 :D

amazon.co.uk are selling it with the kit lens for £580 right now, total bargain!

review: http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/slrs/canon_eos550d

All in all, the EOS 550D is the most compelling DSLR of its class that we've ever tested. It is hard to imagine how much more we might realistically expect from a product of this type, and although the improvements that Canon has made over the EOS 500D aren't revolutionary, the 550D is a better camera than its predecessor. In terms of both still and video capture, the 550D is currently the best camera of its type on the market.

I am just a noob to DSLRs though. the last thing I bought for the camera was this, which has been an amazing help so far:

^ Thanks Samadhi and felix, researching the 550D right now :) Have to have a serious think about what lens would be appropriate (and conveneint) to start with too.

Belarki - a phtographer friend of mine sent me this website: http://www.camera-warehouse.com.au/ which is apparentely very good.

A couple of pieces of advice i've been given - if you buy a bundle, research the lenses that are provided - even if you have a fantastic camera, if you have shit lenses, your camera loses any of the quality it was purchased for. I am also definitely purchasing a UV and polarising filter - due to me not having anything like that at the moment, i have used my sunglass lenses (polarised) to have a play with the effect. This was the result of one such session down at Bell's Beach:

I don't have comparative photos, however there is no glare on the water which means that you see more of the subtle differences in water colour, and the photos aren't washed at all. I can only imagine how awesome using a good polarising filter would be!

I'm in the same boat, Belarki - i'm tossing up between a Canon 550D and a Nikon D5000. I posted the question on fb and got about 30 replies - divided almost down the middle (15/15) with Nikon and Canon recommendations! So confusing.

If you didn't see in one of the photo contest threads (which I feel as though I remember you commenting on it so I think you did), I shoot with the Nikon D5000. I absolutely love it. Would I like to have a nicer camera? Sure. Is the 5000 a good camera? Fuck yeah it is.

When I was in the DSLR market, I was brand new to em. I like to think I have an artists eye... and in the few years preceding my purchase, I'd somewhat developed an eye for photography (in my own opinion). I'd been taking my Nikon point and shoot to baseball games and big cities across the east coast US for a while taking what I felt were some pretty damn good pictures. In each session of reviewing them, however, I'd noticed a few common themes... dull coloration and the occasion slight graininess. So I felt what I needed to do was look into a nicer camera. I was to the point where I thought my composition had reached it's peak with my point and shoot and wanted something that offered me more manual control. When I first was looking into DSLRs, I knew I wanted something in the middle. Not the lowest grade because I knew I'd be getting into photography pretty deeply, but not the most expensive (or complicated) because I wanted something more user friendly to ease me into the DSLR world.

Hence, my choice to go with the Nikon D5000. It's been such an incredible camera for me. Like I said... there are times where I wish I'd spent the extra money, but realistically... I'm still learning to use my 5000 and probably will be for some time. There's plenty of options to keep me busy. BELEEEEEEEEE DAT!

The main reasons, however, that I went with the 5000 instead of the 3000 was because the 5000 offers HD video and has an articulating screen. The articulating screen has been invaluable. It's absolutely beyond convenient for the low angled shots. I can just angle my screen to lay flat on the ground, flip on the live view (LCD shows what you'd see through the viewfinder) and still have the option to manually move your focal point and all that jazz.

So yeah... I could have gone with a better camera if I wanted to spend the money, but MAN have I been in love with my D5000 since I got it. It's seriously such a great camera.

Re: Canon vs. Nikon

I think it all depends on which interface you prefer. I love using Canon point and shoots but I prefer a Nikon DSLR.

Also, I believe Canon lenses zoom counter-clockwise whereas Nikon zooms clockwise.

^ that could be the best and most advanced and expensive camera in the world, but it looks SHIT. sorry dude. :(

Re: Canon vs. Nikon

Well, my Canon 450D zooms IN anti-clockwise, which is what you're saying? But if it did it the other way, I'm sure I'd pick it up reasonably quickly. :D

But enough technical mumbo jumbo, allow me to sum it up:

Canons are for men

Nikons are for girls

Easy. ;)

Alrighty thank you all for the suggestions, I have in my hands a shiny new Canon 550D with a Sigma 17-70mm lens :D

(of course I tried to save a few dollars and bought it through a cheap site and have just discovered I'm stuck with a Korean power adapter for the battery pack so can't charge and use the damned thing until I get a replacement >.< )

Oh i've been looking at sigma lenses for the last few days, and drooling. I've decided to get myself this baby:

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM lens review

It performs really well with dim/low light. I want to take star/night sky photos and this will work really well for that.

I also want your macro lens, belarki. I may have to roll you for it ;)

I have also decided on the Canon 550D. :)

^ yeh there are quite a few options for that body at the moment with twin canon lens kits, they're being advertised everywhere! I guess it's as the 600D & 60D are superseding the older model? Anyway I wanted a single zoom lens for convenience whilst traveling and the sigma one fit the bill without being too expensive (Also had the canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM recommended but that was out of my budget.... which I went way over anyway I might add lol >.<). The one you linked looks gorgeous too!

Oh I used camerasonline.net.au which was slightly cheaper than camera-warehouse; received everything within a week of ordering. You can go cheaper again if you're willing to import from HK etc though. (sorry if I'm not allowed to mention vendor sites mods :S )

don't you just need to buy a cheap travel adapter? or just change the cable for one with an Aussie plug?

this is the charger for my 450D, btw:

canon-lc-e5e-charger.jpg

the cable plugs into a 'figure of 8' style socket on the charger, so replacing that would cost about 50p from ebay (if I didn't already have about 12 lying in a box.)

btw congrats on the new camera!!!

Funnily enough it came with a travel adapter... which didn't fit the plug! It's all good though as I found a fitting cable at home. Time to get snapping =D

So very very soon i'll be buying a Canon 550D Twin Lens Kit - (18-55mm & 55-250mm). I think this is going to be perfect for me to really cut my teeth in the DSLR arena. I am so so so excited! I am getting the kit, 2 x 4G memory cards, a spare battery and this bag for $800. Not too shabby as the camera has a warranty on it until late 2013 and is less than a year old. It was previously owned by a professional photographer so has been kept in pristine condition.

I'll be getting 3 x filters almost immediately - UV, polarising and a neutral density. I want to get the feel for changing lenses, etc before i get better lenses, but once i feel more comfortable i'll be getting the lens i mentioned earlier.

:D
