Phenibut Survey - Focal Seizures?

Hi bluelighters.
I had a few instance of phenibut ingestion (toss and wash).
I had a low dose, and used a slow, incremental redosing schedule with 4-5h intervals between a mild redose.

The experience was absolutely great! It removed so much anxiety and made me feel like I had 12-14 hours of a great low level positivity and the withdraw was similar to the MDMA afterglow on next day.

The problem is, I couldn't refrain from sleeping HARD. I woke up in the hospital and they said I had a focal seizure and was unresponsive.

Has anyone experienced focal seizures off moderate phenibut ingestion? If so, would you be willing to provide details?
Could it be just how it makes you sleep; by focal seizuring a great night's sleep?

I was pretty regimented in the dosing cycle and scheduling.

I would love to hear your stories.

Have a safe evening!
S.J.

How much did you consume? Was it not withdrawal related?

I've never heard of any specific cases re: phenibut (outside of withdrawal) but have heard of various gabapentinoids causing idiopathic seizures at high doses. Of those, phenibut is probably the bigger offender.

I once seriously OD'd on etaqualone (a quaalude analog). I was a) not breathing and b) was having repeated seizures that were so hard to get a handle on that I wound up intubated in the ICU in a medically induced coma for days. The doctors thought that if/when I were to stabilize and be woken up, I would have potentially severe brain damage. But I was fine, for the most part. Certainly couldn't have been good for me.

Sometimes overdoses on GABAergics are paradoxically excitatory, resulting in seizures etc. Hypoxia (not breathing) itself can cause seizures, though that was an unlikely contributor in your case unless your doses of phenibut were truly massive.

Hey, thanks for the response Negrogesic!

I had taken a half gram...waited 4 hours...then dosed 0.25 grams...waited 4 hours...and dosed 0.5 grams.
I was feeling great. All my low level anxieties were gone for maybe 18 hours.
I had started the at around 8:30 in the morning, and it felt like a weak, weird MDMA pill (old school 90s MDMA lol).

I had done this exact schedule 5 times before and have always left 72+++ hours after the initial dose to make sure I was clean enough to decide to do it again; as needed.

All other times I became sleepy around my normal bedtime, and the next 18-24h the withdrawal was just a lovely, positive, glowing state of mind.

The last time I did this, I did my dosing schedule as listed above, and about 2-3h after last dose in cycle I couldn't stay awake, and could barely stand I was so sleepy.

I went to sleep (or so it felt), and I woke up in the hospital, since my wife brought me.
The doc says I had a focal seizure.

I do not want to risk it again, but I am truly interested to discover if that is just it's mechanism of action for sleep, or if anyone else has experienced this.

also, it should be noted, phenibut was the only thing in my system...well...coffee too <g>

I am sorry you had to go through the apoxia and coma 8 ^ (.
I am glad you pulled through with no brain damage; truly.

Thanks for all the information and help!!

So you took 1.25g in total and had a seizure? That does not sound right at all. Maybe though, as the very knowledgeable @negrogesic says gabapentinoids can cause seizures. Dose seems low though.

I've used it at least a couple hundred times without issues. Always slept great.

Had you by any chance consumed any stimulants with it, herbal supplements or even heavy caffeine use?

Hi Badboy, Hi Neegrogesic,

I did indeed take that much (staggered) and had a focal seizure.

I had given it some thought about any drugs I would've had in my system at the time. The answers is none....BUT....I was only thinking of controlled substances (sch I - IV).n
I had no controlled or elicit substances in my system.

What I didn't account for is the amount of coffee I drink, the Alpha GPC, nicotine, and most importantly I was on a cycle of Ecdysterone.
I had also been 2 months after the last ozempic cycle.

I cannot speak to any of these, and was thinking Phenibut was the primary agonist.

Medically speaking, I *do* have something called Acromegaly (a form of gigantism), and I likely have MEN2 (multiple endocrine neoplasia 2).
It is also possible that I miss-measured (even though I weigh with a digital triple-beam.

It is also possible that I re-dosed and just forgot one or two.

Long story short, I am going to chalk this up to possible interactions between ecdysterone, GPC, and Phenibut. Or, more likely with my unique physiology or forgetting to log re-doses or making a mistake when measuring.

It really just felt like I needed sleep badly and I couldn't stop it. It did not feel like a seizure, I just wanted to sleep.
The doctors could not find anything on the tox report (as expected), and when I told them about it they had to look it up for details, but had no advice for me.
According to them, I was a perfectly health person with no obvious trigger.

The important thing is I learn well, and will not be doing this anymore despite how much I ended up adoring it.
Harm reduction's most valuable behavior <g>.

Thank you folks so very much for talking with me about this...truly. It sounds like it is unique to me.

Y'all have yourself a great 2026!!

Cheers!
